Director’s Briefing – February 2014

Welcome to the thirty-second Briefing and the second scheduled Briefing for 2014.

Encroachment begins

As I expected, my real-world job has commenced its encroachment upon my evenings and weekends, with a sneak attack known as exam and assignment marking (including second marking for colleagues which was an unexpected bureaucratic ambush). I am now in a standard melee, battling it out to build lecture material and new assignments faster than I have to deliver them.

On the long-term plan of gaming software through student projects, my combined business/IT degree passed its second hurdle and subject to validation (third hurdle) should commence in September 2015.

My GCP time will now shift into a time-sliced regime of contractual necessities, project phase organisation, and draft product review.

Shadow World

As I hope you are all aware, Emer 3 is now available as a pdf at an introductory discount of 16 USD (full price of 18 USD from 22 Feb). Terry is collating the minor errata and we will update the pdf in the next couple of weeks – if you buy before the update, just go into your OneBookShelf account and redownload the file. The print versions will incorporate the errata corrections and will be available either at the tail end of this month or in March.

Terry is himself time-slicing on Eidolon and Emer 2 for their enhanced editions, so I am expecting that I will be reviewing at least one of them in March. I have some contractual necessities still to sort out regarding the third-party sourcebooks.

Rolemaster

The RM Classic dataset for Rolemaster Combat Minion is now available for purchase from OneBookShelf. The Rolemaster Combat Minion engine is a free web app that coupled with the dataset, will streamline your Rolemaster combat encounters. Attack results can be calculated with full table lookup – no more crossindexing on attack tables and flipping to a critical table – and all wounds applied, tracked and saved to your own database of PCs, NPCs and monsters. This is a revolution in the Rolemaster gaming experience.

You can try an evaluation version free of charge – so give it a go and see if the RCM is a game changer for you.

The RMSS/FRP dataset will be released in the next week or so, assuming no snags with the go-live of the RM Classic dataset arise.

HARP and HARP SF (and Spacemaster)

On the ICE forums, there have been a number of interesting discussions regarding the old Spacemaster Imperium setting and future avenues of expansion for HARP SF and its Tintamar universe.

The Imperium setting remains a popular universe for Spacemaster fans, not only in discussion threads, but also one that continues to generate sales through the collection of rule books, supplements and adventures that we sell as scanned pdfs on OneBookShelf. Terry Amthor, one of the cocreators of the Imperium setting, has expressed interest in being involved again with it. Resurrecting the Imperium as a Spacemaster setting has two issues – the first that a unified Spacemaster rules system does not yet exist, the second that the existing setting is buried in those pdfs. The first issue should eventually be resolved and HARP SF could also be used as the rules engine; the second issue is a need for some serious OCRing and text extraction of the existing pdfs. I have two questions for you as fans – 1) would you be interested in a HARP SF Imperium setting sourcebook and possible followups? (Post your thoughts on the ICE forums) and 2) irrespective of the answer, do we have any fans with time and software on their hands to do the OCR / text extraction over the next few months so that we can more easily restore the Imperium (as a HARP SF setting perhaps and a definite future unified Spacemaster setting)? Post your thoughts on the ICE forums.

In another forum topic, the suggestion has been made about “thematic” sourcebooks for HARP SF and the Tintamar universe. Instead of, or perhaps in addition to, sourcebooks on a sector of space such as the Federation Sector or the Nexus Sector, we should have sourcebooks that focus on a style of play so military, exploration, trader, covert ops, etc., and support this with material for the Tintamar universe, which could potentially be used in other settings. This is an intriguing possibility – what do you think? Post your thoughts on the ICE forums.

Cyradon

I have reviewed the final draft of “Escort Duty” and it was (as I expected) really great. It is now in “safe” mode, awaiting finalised monster stat blocks. The final draft of “M for Murder” still requires my attention.

Until next time

My time-sliced life continues – my hope is that I will have sufficient time slices to get some manuscripts reviewed, some contractuals completed, and TGA#4 checked over before handover to layout phase. The next scheduled Briefing will be in March.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

ROLEMASTER

We are now moving very close to the release of the brand new e-support package the Rolemaster Combat Minion.

Rolemaster Combat Minion is a web application used by the GM to help track combat encounters. It speeds game-play considerably by performing all necessary dice rolls and table look-ups. It also handles all end-of-round upkeep, keeps track of all PC and NPC/creature wounds, and performs perception, move & maneuver and attunement rolls.

While the software itself is available for free, the data tables will be made available through the OneBookShelf Network in the not too distant future. In the time being you can read more information and take a look at a few previews of the software on the dedicated Rolemaster Combat Minion thread on our forum.

HARP

Following the release of HARP College of Magics and HARP Martial Law at the tail end of last year, we’re now working on a number of other HARP products which we hope to see released this year.

It is hard to say precisely when the upcoming products will be released but we expect one of the first releases to be The Guild Adventurer #4 which will contain a lot of HARP material.

In addition to this, in the not too distant future we are expecting to make an open call for HARP SF content. Once we have put together an outline for the call it will be announced on OUR FORUM and in the Director’s Briefing and Newsletter.

Director’s Briefing – January 2014

Happy New Year to everyone. This is our thirty-first Briefing and is the first scheduled Briefing for 2014.

I am back from an extended holiday overseas and am catching up on email and GCP projects, and am feeling refreshed from my break from the demands of students and reinvigorated by having seen the second instalment of The Hobbit (which I thought was excellent fun despite veering further from the book) and catching up on my science fiction by completing Jack McDevitt’s six “Alex Benedict” novels and Linda Nagata’s Nanotech Succession (Tech Heaven, Bohr Maker, Deception Well, and Vast). For those interested in sf, the Benedict novels are mysteries set in a future 10,000 years from now and the adventures of the protagonists could readily be mapped to a sf game; the Nanotech books are more transhuman than dystopian cyberpunk; both could form the basis for sf gaming. My Kindle continues to prove its value in keeping my reading up but the luggage weight down!

A retrospective of 2013

As in January 2012 and 2013, we will begin this Briefing with a look back at the achievements of the previous year. As with 2012, 2013 deviated from our plan, yet despite those deviations, it was a good year for GCP in terms of releases, expected and unexpected. Indeed, we were frequently in the top 15 publishers on RPGNow and across all OneBookShelf sites, we were in the top 2-3% of publishers by sales over the year.

In rebranding, we finished off the residual products, returning all of the RMQs and Channeling Companion to sale.

In Shadow World, Cloudlords of Tanara received an update and new material from Terry Amthor, and was released in pdf and print. Emer 3 evaded publication in 2013 but a final version is now with me for checking before release. Two third-party Shadow World sourcebooks have been approved to proceed and a formal call for Shadow World adventures issued.

In HARP, we released the enhanced HARP Fantasy in softcover and hardcover formats and this was followed by the enhanced versions of HARP Martial Law and HARP College of Magics in pdf, softcover print and hardcover print. The enhanced release of Loot: a Field Guide and the new HARP Bestiary remain incomplete, due to the incredibly high demands on my time from my new real-world job which has forestalled me from doing the writing of my contributions to both. Cyradon has similarly been delayed from its enhanced release but behind the scenes authors continue to build a dazzling array of great adventures for it.

The unexpected surprise of 2013 was the advent of commercial-grade computer software support for character creation and combat tracking, heralded by the quintet of AutoHARP releases covering all five HARP Fantasy and SF releases. As 2013 came to a close, the Rolemaster Combat Minion package, which promises to deliver Rolemaster combat management and tracking on an unprecedented scale and quality, was being readied for release.

In unified Rolemaster, beta discussions and playtesting of new Arms Law, Character Law, and Spell Law continued apace, while the RMU team slaved away on revisions to the material and on Treasure Law and Creature Law betas.

Looking ahead to 2014

What I expect to happen is that we will have an early flurry of product releases, my real-world job will quickly encroach on all my available time (4 modules to teach this upcoming semester of which two must be built plus assorted PhDs and dissertation students) until the end of June, and then a normal work balance should take effect for me and we should have regular releases thereafter including those products requiring me to write some or all of them. Release schedules during the encroachment period will be heavily dependent on others getting on with work as I will be time-slicing my efforts into contractual necessities, project phase organisation, and review.

In terms of early releases, the Rolemaster Combat Minion application will probably be the first release, kicking off with the Rolemaster Classic dataset (as that is the original version by David Webster) and assuming no deployment issues to be swiftly followed by the RMSS/FRP dataset.

Emer 3 will be the first non-software product release. The order of subsequent enhanced Shadow World products will then depend on Terry. The sourcebooks being written by freelancers are not yet on contractual deadlines.

RMU will enter second beta release with a combined Arms Law and Character Law book and Spell Law leading the way and Treasure Law and Creature Law leapfrogging to second beta.

All of the necessary art for TGA#4 is now in hand at screen resolution quality, so we can finally get this product to release.

Work on HARP Loot, HARP Bestiary, and HARP Folkways will continue as will work on the Cyradon line. A realistic assessment suggests that these products will require me to escape the encroachment period before they complete but we may be more fortunate.

As always, I will be keeping you updated in the monthly Briefings.

Until next time

Emer 3 awaits my final review so that is my next task. The next scheduled Director’s Briefing will be in February.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

Random updates from Terry Amthor

  • Shadowstone Novel Book 2 (including secret SW information)
  • Emer IV! (really?)
  • Something Else

Director’s Briefing – December 2013

Welcome to the thirtieth Briefing and twelfth scheduled Briefing for 2013.

Nearly off the treadmill

Down to three lectures and one assignment still to produce for this semester, so there will be a serious slackening of the real-world treadmill, although two new course modules need working on for next semester. My long-term plan to create future gaming software through student projects has moved a trifle closer as my proposal for a new combined business and IT degree at my university has passed its first hurdle.

HARP

No updates to report from HARP this month.

Cyradon

I still have the second (and potentially final) drafts of “M for Murder” (which I think needs a different title) and “Escort Duty” to review – though the first drafts of both were so good that I expect it will not take long to approve them and put them in safe mode awaiting monster stat blocks.

Rolemaster

The Rolemaster Combat Minion software has had a relatively painless public playtest. Meanwhile a quartet of volunteers came together to create the RMSS/FRP dataset and had that ready in a matter of days. So assuming there are no minor snags, we should have the Rolemaster Combat Minion with both Classic and RMSS/FRP combat files available for purchase sometime this month. If we assume some minor snags or holiday preparations intervening, then it may shift into January.

The RMU team have been putting in the hours on the second beta manuscripts, with really good progress on all four manuscripts – we are combining Arms Law and Character Law into a single volume. The ideal result will be to get all four out at once for beta testing, though if necessary I will settle for Arms Law/Character Law and Spell Law leading the second beta charge.

Shadow World

On Emer 3, the RMSS stats are done and just need a perusal from me as a final check before I hand them over to Terry and we make a big push to get a pdf version of Emer 3 out. Both Terry and I have reviewed the module currently entitled “Priest King of Shade” and we will be getting it formally under contract – though it will be getting a new name. Terry is still reviewing the Lethys module and starting an editorial pass.

A reminder that our call for Shadow World adventures is still open – see October’s Director’s Briefing for details.

Until next time

I have many things to do, including making the annual royalty payments on some older products to authors and artists, and then its back to work in the real and gaming industry worlds. The next scheduled Briefing will be in the new year, so all that remains for me to do is to wish you all a Merry Christmas (or other holiday of your choosing) and a Happy New Year.

Best wishes,
Nicholas
