Iron Crown Enterprises is back

Iron Crown Enterprises logoIf you’ve been on RPGNow recently, you may have noticed something a little different. Guild Companion Publications is no longer in the list of publishers. Now before the wailing and gnashing of teeth starts, there is no need to panic. We are still publishing roleplaying games and selling them exclusively through RPGNow, DrivethruRPG and the rest of the OneBookShelf (OBS) network. The reason that you can’t find us is that (on OBS at least) we have changed our name to Iron Crown Enterprises!

The return of Iron Crown Enterprises to the OBS network is part of a larger change within the business. As I’m sure you’re aware, last year Aurigas Alderbaron LLP and Guild Companion Publications merged. This simplified the company structure, reduced administrative costs and gave everyone more time to focus on creating great RPG products. We are currently processing the necessary legal paperwork to formally rename the company, but we thought it was high time to get the ICE name back in circulation on OneBookShelf ahead of our next product release. Our aim is to bring back a lot of old fans who weren’t aware that Guild Companion Publications were publishing Iron Crown Products and that the increased awareness will bring in new fans and players.

You can get all available Iron Crown products from the OneBookShelf network and if you haven’t already, we strongly recommend that you head over there now to see our full catalogue.

Welcome to 2017

Happy New Year to everyone. Welcome to the sixty-eighth Briefing and the first scheduled Briefing of 2017.

My reading this year has not involved any new books. Instead for the past few months, I have been rereading Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series and have currently reached Feet of Clay. There are a handful of later books which will be new to me, but for the moment, this is essentially “comfort reading” where I can pick up the book, read a bit, and most importantly put it down again at any point. The last few months have been so hectic that any new fantasy or sf epic would have been spoiled by too many interruptions or would have interfered with my progress on the treadmill. Once you get past the running gags of The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic, the books from Equal Rites onwards are true comic gems and remain funny on rereading.

In terms of the cinema, the latest addition to the Potterverse “Fantastic Beasts and How to Find Them” was unexpectedly good, although my wife preferred Dr Strange. Pride of place went to Rogue One. Previous Star Wars prequels have not been on a par with the original trilogy. Rogue One was, however, excellent. The body count was extraordinarily high on the hero side for a Star Wars movie – one expects many Stormtrooper casualties and the execution of Imperial commanders for failing, of course – but in retrospect this was inevitable as Rogue One directly leads to Star Wars A New Hope and most of its protagonists do not appear in the original trilogy. Movie continuity must be preserved.

A retrospective on 2016

As with 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, let us begin with a look back on what was achieved in 2016. We named 2016 as the year of unrelenting perseverance, and it turned out to be so, despite the long shadow of unwanted crises in my workplace.

We persevered and a number of successful outcomes have emerged.

Eidolon: City in the SkyIn Shadow World, the new version of Eidolon did reach softcover. Terry made progress on multiple fronts – Emer I, Emer II, Haalkitaine, and others of his own devising – as well as making some progress on editing of Priest-King and Lethys. 2017 is a year where we try to get Terry to focus in his writing so that we get completion on at least two Shadow World products this year.

Progress on the HARP Bestiary manuscript enabled us to finish the stats for The Guild Adventurer #4, which meant that we could finally publish this long-awaited product. A successful and visible outcome.

Colin’s various adventure seed blog posts inspired two module proposals – Trail of the Corrupt and Garden of Rain. The latter by Brad White has arrived in full first draft. Chris Seal has started shipping finished sections of Caer Glais, his adventure module set in the Shatterings. Aaron Smalley has been toiling away on No Quarter under the Crown.

HARP Loot for High Adventure Roleplaying RPGIn HARP, as the year drew to a close, we released a new enhanced version of HARP Loot, compatible with HARP Fantasy, HARP Martial Law and HARP College of Magics. This was another successful and visible outcome. HARP Folkways is rattling through the final stages of layout. HARP Bestiary remains stubbornly incomplete in terms of stat blocks. Two new HARP sourcebooks have been commissioned, namely HARP Strongholds and HARP Beyond the Veil.

In HARP SF, The Poseidon Gambit has had its first draft edited and is with its creator to complete.

Mentalism Companion for ERA2016 was another very good year for Rolemaster software support. The ERA package received various updates to its base software and saw many new datasets released including ERA The Armory, ERA Essence Companion, ERA Mentalism Companion, ERA Channeling Companion and ERA Rolemaster Companion I. Max certainly knows how to persevere relentlessly.

2016 saw an enlarged RMU team of Matt Hanson, Dan Henry, Joeri Timmermann, Jonathan Dale and Grahan Bottley bring Arms & Character Law, Spell Law and Treasure Law to stable drafts. Creature Law is receiving critical attention.

In December, ICE/GCP attended Dragonmeet for the third time as traders. Drawing on our lessons from 2014 and 2015, we had a very successful convention, generating a modest profit again.

GCP was a frequent entrant on the top 15 publisher listing on RPGNow. We continued in the top 2-3% of publishers over the year across all OneBookShelf sites, and in the top two for software products across OneBookShelf all year.

Guild Companion Publications Ltd and Aurigas Aldebaron LLC merged into a single company, halving our administrative costs and simplifying our corporate and our legal framework.

2017

This will be a year of balance – a focus on completion while ensuring that products for the future are commissioned.

The first thing you will notice is that we will be formally changing the company name from Guild Companion Publications Ltd to Iron Crown Enterprises Ltd. Expect to see the Iron Crown Enterprises name on the OneBookShelf network soon. The corporate changes will take a little longer to accomplish.

For RMU, we will see Creature Law brought to stable drafts as two separate volumes and I will be performing my close edits of the whole RMU set.

For HARP, the next release will be HARP Folkways. I will personally be pressing hard to complete HARP Bestiary as soon as possible. The moment that we have a complete HARP Bestiary draft, “Something Wicked” will come into my personal writing focus. We will also be in a position to move forward with adventure modules and the return of the Cyradon setting. HARP Strongholds and HARP Beyond the Veil are not slated to arrive in draft until late in 2017.

For HARP SF, the first goal is to complete and release The Poseidon Gambit. The second goal is to commission additional HARP SF products.

For Shadow World, we will do our best to ensure that Terry stays sufficiently focused to finish his own writing projects and his editing work

In software, we hope that our software creators will continue to support our games and especially be willing to support RMU. We will be seeking out some new opportunities for software support

In terms of conventions, we intend to attend Dragonmeet as traders and would like at very least to send a representative to UK Games Expo. We also want to encourage the Order of the Iron Crown to be more active in attending conventions.

Until next time

All that remains for me to do is wish you all a very Merry Christmas (or other holiday of your choosing) and a Happy New Year. The next scheduled Briefing will be in January 2017.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

Welcome

To the sixty-seventh Briefing and the twelfth scheduled Briefing of 2016.

Dragonmeet 2016

John, Colin, Chris and myself attended Dragonmeet with all of us manning the stand at various points of the day. Due to an unfortunate mixup, Chris did not get a designated table for his game early enough to recruit sufficient players in time to make his scenario viable. Despite this glitch, we had some very interesting conversations with fans and (potential) freelancers, and we sold a reasonable number of books, and three lucky fans won prizes in our stand raffle.

Looking forward to next year, we hope to have some appropriate banners made so that we can give our stand greater impact. We also want to see more ICE gaming scenarios being run.

HARP

HARP Loot for High Adventure Roleplaying RPG

HARP Loot went on sale last month; the master proof copies of both softcover and hardcover arrived in time for me to sanction a short batch which we received in time for Dragonmeet. You can now purchase HARP Loot in pdf, softcover and hardcover from OneBookShelf. There is a 5 USD discount available for bundle purchases of pdf and softcover/hardcover.

Terry is in the last few pages of the layout of HARP Folkways. I will then need to check that all is well with it. My expectation is that we will make HARP Folkways the first product launch of 2017.

ERA for Rolemaster

ERA Channeling CompanionMax has completed another ERA dataset. This time, he brings you RMSS Channeling Companion. This adds all the professions, spell lists, talents and critical tables from the Companion

You can purchase the dataset from OneBookShelf directly via THIS LINK.

Max continues to make improvements to the baseline packages. If you have already downloaded the base ERA packages, and you have registered to receive emails from publishers on the OneBookShelf network, then you may already have received emails indicating that files have been updated. Please download at your convenience.

More on HARP, Shadow World, and RMU

Colin, John Duffield and I are all trying to get our respective portions of HARP Bestiary completed, and being variously derailed.

Terry is in at least three places at once – Emer I, Emer II, and Haalkitaine. (When he’s not laying out tables for HARP Folkways, that is).

The full draft of Garden of Rain, a new Rolemaster/HARP module from Brad White, has arrived and is on my editorial intray.

Chris Seal has sent in substantial chunks of Caer Glais, a new module to be set in the world of Mithra (but not in Anias or Cyradon), so that is jostling for attention in the editorial intray.

In a pause for air, Jonathan Dale did a consistency sweep of RMU Spell Law (to check the amendments from Graham Bottley) against the current version of RMU Arms and Character Law. He’s now returned to RMU Creature Law.

Until next time

All that remains for me to do is wish you all a very Merry Christmas (or other holiday of your choosing) and a Happy New Year. The next scheduled Briefing will be in January 2017.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

City of Archendurn

The City of Archendurn is the capitol of the kingdom and your first portal to adventure on the world of Aernth, a medieval fantasy setting with Celtic overtones, tempered with a dash of gritty realism.

In this 57-page module, you will find a richly detailed living city, illustrated with color street-maps and floor plans of selected buildings. NPCs from all walks of life from reigning monarch to humble tradesman are described, many with complete Rolemaster and HARP statistics. Real people for real role-playing opportunities rather than cardboard cutouts. Your players will want to make Archendurn their headquarters; their characters will have a place to call home. A superb set of extended adventure hooks will help you to get your next great campaign underway.

If you have your own world, do not despair. You’ll find that Archendurn can be slotted into most fantasy settings with a minimum of fuss, saving you the time and effort needed to design a complete metropolis.

Director’s Briefing – November 2016

Welcome

To the sixty-sixth Briefing and the eleventh scheduled Briefing of 2016. I certainly rolled a 66 last month, slipping outside the office and landing on my back. Still feeling a bit fragile. Academia continues to be relentless. However, some good news:

HARP

HARP Loot for High Adventure Roleplaying RPGHARP Loot is now on sale.

Originally published in 2005, HARP Loot: a Field Guide was written by Jonathan Cassie. It has been revised to bring it into alignment with HARP Fantasy and HARP College of Magics, given a new name – HARP Loot – and can once more resume its place in the roll of honour of HARP sourcebooks.

HARP Loot is a vast treasure trove of items, mundane and magical, and where and with whom (or sometimes what) it can be found. More, it contains rules for creating new types of runes, new potions, new charms, fetishes and talismans, and intelligent items. It introduces alternative means for enchanting permanent magical items, including a new set of potent High Magic spells. It also provides rules and guidance for when magic items and loot of any sort backfires on creator and possessor.

The original cover has been preserved as the frontispiece of the book, while a new cover from Raymond Gaustadnes makes the new edition distinctive. The interior art has also been refreshed with contributions from Maria Duffield, Rick Hansen and Raymond Gaustadnes.

You can purchase the pdf from OneBookShelf via THIS LINK.

The print masters have already been sent to OneBookShelf in the hopes that we will be able to have softcover and hardcover versions in time for Dragonmeet on 3rd December.

Software

Rolemaster Companion I for ERAERA for Rolemaster

Max has completed another ERA dataset, namely Rolemaster Companion I. This adds all the professions, races, spell lists, individual spells, and background options from the Companion. It also includes all the herbs and creatures from Rolemaster Companion I

You can purchase the dataset from OneBookShelf directly via THIS LINK.

In addition to a new dataset, Max has added herb lists to the RMC Character Law dataset and RMSS Core and Character Law datasets from the analogous books. Herbs and creatures have been added to the two Shadow World datasets. A new MacOS Sierra base has been added to the main software and various fixes made to other datasets. If you have already purchased one of the improved datasets, and you have registered to receive emails from publishers on the OneBookShelf, then you may already have received emails indicating that files have been updated. Please download at your convenience.

More on HARP, Shadow World, and RMU

HARP Folkways has been sent to Terry for his layout magic.

Terry is feverishly writing the enhanced version of Emer I. He may also targeting Haalkitaine as it needs a lighter touch in terms of revisions. In between times, “Shade” is receiving some editorial attention and he is also working intermittently on Emer IV.

Garden of Rain, a new Rolemaster/HARP module from Brad White, is expected to arrive in first draft form in the next couple of weeks. It is inspired by one of Colin’s adventure seeds, This may become a RMU/HARP module.

Dragonmeet Convention

A reminder that John Seal, Colin Smith and myself will be at Dragonmeet on the 3rd December in London. Still opportunities to run a last-minute Rolemaster, HARP/HARP SF, or Spacemaster game. If you are attending the convention, please drop by our stand and have a chat.

Until next time

Back to this treadmill. The next scheduled Briefing will be in December.

Best wishes,
