Greetings to the HARP Community
« on: September 08, 2009, 09:16:50 PM »
Hey HARPers!

I'm brand new to HARP, though I have been playing MERP/RMFRP for a very long time.  I am liking what I see so far.  I have the #3000 book and should be getting the rest of the books in PDF soon, so I should have plenty to read!

Anyway, I will be getting into the game with the aim of running a campaign, and I am looking for initial advice from experienced HARP players for things I should be on the look out for making the transition from MERP/RMFRP to HARP.  They look different enough so far, but I'm only a few pages in so far on a serious read.

I hope to be a part of the community as I learn more about the game.

Glad to be here,

Armory Dave

Welcome aboard Dave.  As you dig into HARP don't hesitate to bring up any questions you may have, or use the Search feature to see what may already be out there.  Glad to have another HARPer on line...  Welcome!  :)

Welcome.

My advicewould be to read and digest the HARP book. . .then decide what you want more of. . .more combat, more magic, more ?

Once you know what you want more of, it'll be easier to decide "what next".

Welcome! My biggest recommendation to any new GM is to run through plenty of test combat scenarios before you play for real. Make sure you take note of the fact that low level monsters can still be BIG challenges. For example, I find that you should never just compare the level of the monsters to the party level. Always compare the OBs and DBs, as well as special abilities of the PCs and their enemies before you pit them against each other. All the best! Have fun!

Roll a few sets of d100

Take the first pair to roll 01-05

Burn them

This will teach your other dice whats happens if they roll fumbles....

My biggest suggestion is to bend HARP to your own will.  Make it do whatever you want it to, by bending rules, ignoring rules, finding new rules on the forum here or on the Guild Companion, making new rules up, etc.

Have fun with it.  ;D

Thanks for the warm greeting.  I see the forum has a creative way of expressing the name of that licensed game ICE used to make.  LOL.

Ok, I'm sure I'll have questions very soon, but I promise to search for the answers before posting.   :)

The current company has no connection with that game, hence the name game with it - as it tends to highlight that disconnect (the old ICE had a connection, but that company is dead and gone, and this ICE is a different company altogether).

If you like, you can go into your profile and turn off the word filtering.  ;D

BTW, Welcome!

Well, I hadn't read the company history in the few years I've been coming to the site.  I never knew about that changing of owners and all that other stuff.

So, now that that's cleared up, um, anybody want a soda?

Guess I might have to come through on that one, eh?  Do you take HARP game loot soda that gives a temporary +25 OB when used against thirst?

SamwiseSeven makes a very good point, also (as usual)! HARP is so incredibly easy to customize to your own personal tastes! After you learn the core rules, you can dabble with loads other optional stuff to see what fits your groups' style the best. Not to mention, I have never played another game that is so easy to house rule and keep everything balanced. Before long, you'll feel like HARP is a system of your own devising... with just a little help from Tim! lol :D

Not all of my ideas are great, I've had a few rotten eggs in there.

Am I ruining anyone's soda party by saying that I, on the next new start with HARP, will use the D20ified version of HARP from the beginning.

If I do, just forget what I said. I'll take a peach juice, please.

I've been using it since about 3 months in of my current campaign, which has ran a little over 2 years now.  Mostly due to player demand, but it doesn't even bug me anymore, now that I finished relabelling my crit tables.

The only thing that is a bit annoying with the D20-Fied is that I normally have to copy and paste spells, and then edit them by dividing everything by 5 for the players.

Using D20s is faster and easier, but not when you have to divide everything by 5 at the table... hehe.  So some prep work before hand helps.

I talked about it with my fellow GM yesterday, and he said the same thing about the hassle beforehand. Now I'll try tweaking the spreadsheet to automatically give numbers that are mulltiples of 5. I hope that will be a good compromise. 50 + 75 is still somehow easier than 43 + 82... I hope :)
