“How much further?” T’kel realized the moment the words were out of his mouth that it sounded like whining. He looked up the ice-covered cliff face to the climber above him, hoping that maybe the howling of the frozen wind had masked some of his petulant tone.

But his uncle turned and yelled enthusiastically, “Almost there!” It was hard to read his expression, between the fur-lined hood, the tinted goggles, and of course the nearly blinding snow. But at least he didn’t seem annoyed. But it was hard to tell with Uncle T’revor sometimes, even under the best conditions.

T’kel swung his baw into the ice ahead, pulled with all the strength his sore muscles could muster, and clambered doggedly after his seemingly tireless uncle. And he cursed his father again for letting him leave the nice warm cavern-halls of Tanara to join ‘Crazy Uncle T’revor’ on one of his ‘archaeological adventures.’

When T’kel looked up again though, T’revor had … vanished! The cliff face above as far as he could see was nothing but jagged white ice.

T’kel tried to still his breathing as he looked down. But there was no sign of his uncle, and… of course, the line connecting them was still leading up, and it seemed to vanish about ten feet above, maybe into a cave. ‘I’m an idiot.’ The young Dúranak chided himself, just as a fur-rimmed head popped out from the side of the cliff.

“Are you coming up or not?”

After doffing their hoods and goggles, they scrambled down a dark, treacherously uneven, ice-floored tunnel for perhaps fifty paces before T’kel perceived a faint blue glow ahead.

“Here it is!” T’revor called with an unmistakable ring of triumph as he came to the end of the tunnel.

The tunnel did indeed end in … a door. Though to be honest it was unlike any door T’kel had ever seen. It was metal, hexagonal, with a small frost-coated window near the top. The blue light was coming through that window, but it was impossible to see what was on the other side. The door was set in a metal wall, and there was a small inset plate next to the door, with some cabochon-like raised crystals on it. One was luminous and slowly blinking green.

The infamous Dúranak Mystic turned to his young nephew, grinning as he cocked an eyebrow. Even as he pressed the green light and T’kel felt the ground tremble and a hiss come from the door, T’revor asked, “Shall we have a look at a Taranian Station?”

The door rolled aside into the wall and a blast of stale air hit them. Beyond was a dim chamber full of blinking lights, metal and glass. T’kel's heart was speeding. What kind of ancient sorcery was this?

Expedition to the Barrier Peaks is one of my all-time favorite modules.  ;D

That one is news to me. The story above is from 'Wuliris' that I'm working on

Yeah, I got that. It is just that Expedition to the Barrier Peaks was the module where fantasy adventurers investigated a new "dungeon" that turns out to be a long-lost crashed spaceship. So, I am seeing similarities there, and I like it.

Yeah, for me too, though to be fair, I went to other games like Star Wars D6 and Star Frontiers, Battletech/Mechwarrior before making the switch to RM.

One of the reasons I am excited that Terry is doing a lot with the Taranians is that I have always wanted to try that module (Expedition...) in RM. I really like the campaigns/adventures where it is like "a fish out of water" flavor-style. That is some of my favorite stories; take Joe the auto-mechanic from 1988 Philadelphia and drop him in the middle of The World of Greyhawk (or wherever). Love that stuff!

I've gravitated more towards letting the players "get away with murder" before the law whaps them upside of the head really quick, if you know what I mean--not karma, more the repercussions of their actions. In SW that means the Loremasters et al. get interested pretty quick in these noisy upstarts, and the characters' reputations with the Navigators often leads to trouble and ill feeling.

The Taranians sound interesting, especially if I can engineer an "accident" or two along the way.... ;)

Ahh, memories. I had to dig out my old Future Law book. You know, because I needed to refresh about Space Master stuff. Because, stuff.

Just for fun, was procrastinating and going through (very) old photos. Here is your SW author at a con a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (I think it was Los Angeles Origins)

In final edits on Loremaster Legacy, first SW novel. My wonderfully detail-oriented editor and I are going back and forth about whether to italicize things like bar names. Technically, they should not be, but Tolkien, in FotR, italicized Prancing Pony. Granted, UK rules may differ, but she maintains that italics are for ships. (Then I drifted ADHD wise into a different issue... how did authors even indicate things like that in the old days. Tolkien must have written on a manual typewriter, or even longhand. Who decided what was to be italicized?)

Anyway, thoughts on italics? Any editors out there?

How did they do it in ye olde days? Like this (with "ital." noted in the margin when proofing). In emails, using txt, there are two options: ALL CAPS or _like this_ are the two basic options (I prefer the latter).

IMHO, you have a chance to be unique and set a standard for Shadow World, so do it. Just make a note at the beginning of the book as to what you have done and say it is a SW standard not Int English Stand.

But that is just my OP

To some extent, that's what every author does. My editor is applying the Chicago style manual, and she has made some excellent points (like, I go crazy with ellipses, which can get annoying), but authors have their styles, and some authors even vary their style from book to book depending on the mood they are trying to convey.

Meanwhile, as this thing wraps, I just had a thought about doing a book between the first and second Shadowstone novels, a sort of 'Tales from the Shadow World' featuring short stories about some of the characters from the first book (there is a pretty big cast) doing other things when they aren't involved in the main plot. I have heard from several people that they want to know more about different characters like Voriig Kye, the Terran Patrick O'Kiran, and of course the usual favorite, crazy Andraax. Writing short stories about these people is much less taxing to me than spinning a whole novel (and the second novel is mostly done and just needs more tedious editing anyway). Who would you like to read about?
