Nanoing RPGs
« on: November 04, 2012, 05:50:27 PM »
I am an avid Nanoer, and am currently writing  verse novel this year. I was thinking, though, that it would be a good excuse to sit down and bash out a first draft of an RPG setting or supplement, rather than sticking to a vanilla novel. How appealing would such an idea be for you, and what sort of materials can you envisage yourself creating every November?

I have considered it, but this year I am making a story OF my role-playing game, while my wife is constructing a story of her new world she has created :P

My story is set in the shades of darkness setting and it has been lots of fun so far.

If I had to ask for a new supplement, I would ask for some more quishad-urloc stuff. Love those guys!

Is this what Nanoer is :NaNoWriMo is an annual (November) novel writing project that brings together professional and amateur writers from all over the world?

That's it: in the jargon, Nano is NaNoWriMo, and a Nanoer is anying writing something for Nano.

I'm nowehere near that, however I have been performing the difficult task of composing up to 600 lines of verse a day for my verse novel. which even I find exhausting on top of my poem-a-day effort.

I considered doing my entire story in haiku, but after calculating it out, decided I would rather not write ~140 haiku's a day :P BUT I do start each chapter with a haiku now :P

Last year I was a masochist: I worked out how many sonnets could fit into 100 000 words and thrashed them out. I've still got the first drafts in a pile-up of word documents on my computer, and revise one or two every so often.

Never again!

Like I say: the muse can be bribed. :)

just under a week into Nano and I change my "novel" -- now I am writing an RM supplement that I started last year, and have hardly touched (I estimate I need an average of four critters a day done)

I've just gone over 50 000 words, and am barreling on; i usually break at 3 to 3:30 local time, to process emails, but am doing so now, and writing through to dinner time at 6 pm; then writing from 7 pm until 11:30 pm

If I don't pace myself I will burn out :)

Sorry, but I'm lost on this one, not making any sense to me. Only clicked on the thread to find out what on earth a Nanoing RPG is.

what he means is:

writing a 50,000 word novel in 30 days based on your experience in a role playing game.  He personally is writing a role-playing supplement (setting/quests) within the same time frame.

So say you had an exciting 3 year long campaign? it was SO good in fact, your muse has decided to allow you to write it into an epic. it is a lot harder then it sounds, because as we all know, players suck at dialogue ;P

Ok, thanks for the simplification, I get it now.
50,00 words seems enough to break your teeth on. Why not just do a novelette? If you get good feedback then you can continue on...just a thought.

Of course. The 50,000 words are an arbitrary number they came up with which is difficult but not impossible.  it is also supposed to spur would-be-writers into finally getting their ideas down onto paper, and use the rest of the year to modify and perfect.

It also raises money for its young writers program which spreads the love of writing to children whom are interested in it. amongst other pet projects.

their website is:

my sample is:
http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/chippermonks/novels/shadow-over-headquarters

It has been a ton of fun and of course should they deiced my work is any good (needs A LOT of fleshing out), I'll attempt to get it published so Ironcrown can get some royalties ;D got to support my favorite company!

I'm using this year's Nano as the core of a supplement I hope to pitch, for RMU. So while it isn't a novel, it's over 56 000 words of writing.

chippermonks, I'd love to give you feedback when you're ready. The idea of Rolemaster-related fiction has tempted me, and I've even toyed with the bizarre idea of a Shadow World novel consisting of two people talking over a meal, a la The Conversation by Australian author David Brooks. (I know it sounds dull, but he handles the characters and disclosures quite well, and it is very much a novel about honesty and self-reflection.)

I don't, and the closest I come to it is general poems, with fantasy elements, rather than anything inspired by or derived from RM/other RPGs. I do have a handful of Mythos poems, though, more directly inspired by HPL than the game, though. You can read some of my work here: http://www.ironcrown.com/ICEforums/index.php?topic=12786.new#new

If you check out my page, I have chapter 1 of my story posted (which reads like a short story as its more of a setting setter)

Re-posted for ease of copying:
