Simplified RM
« on: August 17, 2010, 07:48:54 AM »
Back in the day, I used to love RM. I still have lots of fond memories of it. But even then I found it too clunky and roll intensive. These days, any game requiring I look at about more than 2 panels of tables is a deal breaker for me and my current group.

But, looking again at some of the EA for RMX, I came across the Simplified RM, which included doing maneuvers, combat and Rr without tables. Now that looks morelike it!
Has anyone used those rules? If so, how did you find them?

I noticed the combat did not really handle things like grappling, or Slaying crits (or large/super large creatures).
Does anyone have any 'fixes' for these omissions?

Cheers!

Yeah! Use the tables..   :Joker2: :laugh1:

More seriously - Grappling is actually hard in any system, but you could treat as a Percentage resolution type of thing, where the result is how grappled the foe it.

Slaying could be handled by including a damage multiple, or perhaps a RR against being killed.

It all depends on how you would prefer to handle it.

If you want simplified RM, you can use RMFRP that simplifies things with the categories idea, and use some of its base rules, i.e. use the result >100 for static maneuvers instead using a table. For RRs you can use a formula based on levels (i.e. 50+def.lvl-atk.lvl.+-modifiers).

You lose realism, but as I always say, if everyone plays with the same rules, the game is balanced.

You could take a look at HARP, maybe you like it  ;)

ICE had a simple game that used Target Numbers.  The Not-RM Adventure Game I think it was.

Non-RM Adventure game?   ???

I like a lot about HARP, but what really turned me off were the changes made to magic and combat.  While I thought the character generation and skill resolution worked great, and the Talents/Gift also worked pretty well, I was really disappointed in how attack spells worked, and I wasn't hugely satisfied with 'all defence=DB'.  Otherwise, I'd have been quite happy with HARP.

They are referring to a game produced by the old ICE, setting in a licensed world created by a fellow with the initials of J.R.R.T.

The 4 letter acronym for that game is one of the words that the word filter replaces. We did that partly in joke, and partly because the current ICE has no connection to that game at all, and thus would prefer that discussions of that game not be held on these forums.

It does not refer to HARP.  ;D

I believe the fellow you're talking about was much more mellow than his son when they found out that oD&D included halflings and orcs.

Um... I am.  ???
I'm looking at an optional rule for RMX actually and looking for more details to flesh out a few cracks that were not addressed by it.
