Spell List aquisition
« on: August 10, 2009, 03:49:12 PM »
Would someone be kind enough to write an example of Spell List Aquisition using RM2 for me.  I seem to be confused....and running in circles with it.  I have apparently been doing it wrong for years.

The RM2 Spell List Acquisition rules are the same as the core RMC Spell List Acquisition rules.

In short, you buy ranks in a spell list. Once you have purchased those ranks, you roll percentile dice, adding 5 for each rank you purchased. If your total is 100+, then you learned the portion of the list you were trying to learn.

IIRC the portion is dependent on whether you are a pure, semi or non-spell caster. ie look at the spell pick table for the range of spells you learn.

Mark's got the summary, but the long version of it is that it depends on profession, the type of list, and the level of spells you are trying to learn on that list.  For example, a pure caster (such as a magician), wants to begin learning Light Law, one of his base lists.  He spends DP points to learn ranks in that list, which will be added to his spell gain roll.  Since he's a pure, learning one of his base lists, he gets an "B" type pick, which means all spells from levels 1 thru 10 will be learned, once he makes a successful spell gain roll.
Ex post facto.

There are two different tables in Spell Law.  Some GM's use one, and some GM's use the other one. One is larger and if i remeber correctly permits to learn more high open spell lists than the shorter table. I believe this two tables change in cost for closed lists and spell list packs.

Yes, those are optional tables. They change the DP costs of some list portions, but they do not change how Spell List Acquisition is performed.
