Disengage from Melee: When interrupted?
« on: February 28, 2013, 05:02:54 PM »

A PC/NPC is attempting to "Disengage from melee." He takes no damage from his melee foe. However, he does take damage from a foe at range (in this case a bolt spell). Does the Disengage succeed?

Thanks,
Old Man

Yes, Disengage is used to separate yourself from a melee foe.  If the melee foe did not hit him, he successfully disengaged.

Thanks! Now the fun part - explaining it to the player(s) involved. (Likely a chase ensues ... )

I have a follow-up. Does it matter if the opponent, of the person trying to disengage, is Hasted/Chi Sped? Or does that just mean the disengage will be brief?

Since both of those abilities allow you to complete two actions in one round, the Disengage from Melee action would be handled as follows:

If hasted character wins initiative, they are able to perform a Full normal Move away. (Actually they parry at 50% for the start of their round, but by the other individuals turn they've already disengaged).

If foe wins initiative, hasted character defends with half parry, and if the attack fails to hit then the hasted character moves away one full normal move.

Thom, thanks, but the scenario is the other way around. The attacker is Hasted, the "disengager" is not.

Then the disengager gets their normal parry to defend against the multiple attacks during the first round, and if either hits they are unable to disengage.  If they both miss the individual can disengage, however I would expect the hasted individual to reengage during the next round because of the higher BMR.  Probably not a smart move for the disengager.  Unless there are multiple attackers about to enter the battle, or he has another way of ensuring he won't suddenly be thrown back into melee, he'd be better off with a Full Parry and hope to wait out the hasted assault - then disengage and run... :)
