Black Ops - Layman (Modern)
« on: June 02, 2011, 02:09:06 PM »
When the Layman was modernized, it kept the same Profession Bonuses as the fantasy version, which in the case of the Layman is problematic because this includes +5 each for Power Awareness and Power Manipulation. This seems unsuitable for modern Layman.

If you have run a Black Ops game, how did you handle this?
Can we get an official errata item for this?
Anyone want to argue it isn't wrong?
I'm thinking either increase Craft and Technical*General bonuses to +10, or move the +5 to Influence and Urban.

IMHO the GM should tailor the category bonuses based on the players background for the Layman profession. I think it says as much in RMSS core book.
In my Black OP's game I did the above.

I allow the layman to place his 50pts in catagory bonuses were he chooses to reflect his chosen expertise.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

I kept the profession bonuses the way they are...

It doesn't seem to make much sense at first, but does allow for eccentric characters and very low level mystical powers in a "real life setting".

The specialisation aspect of the skills I handle with the allocation of 1-2 Occupational skills and 2-6 Everyman skills relevant to the "profession". This tends to more than make up for the apparent "wasted" bonuses.
