Weapon Kata Ruling...
« on: August 12, 2008, 11:57:54 AM »
Hello! One of my players is under the impression that because Monks do Medium attacks instead of Small that this would apply to using a sai in a weapon kata. My initial reaction is not to allow this, but I haven't been able to find a definite ruling in the book. In order to not seem like the evil GM, I'm hoping to get an official ruling from Rasyr perhaps. Thanks in advance for the help!

Monks have a professional ability that increases the size of the Martial Arts attacks from small to medium. The intention has always been that this was for unarmed attacks only.

Weapon Kata is a Martial Arts Combat Style that allows a specific weapon to be used with the Martial Arts, and thus is based on the Martial Arts skill, not a separate weapon skill.

Weapon Kata also allows a character to use Chi Defense, and Monk Attacks (multiple attacks, and multiple foes - from the sidebar next to the profession description) with a kata weapon.

The professional ability does NOT apply to weapons wielded through a Weapon Kata.

Another question about Weapon Kata:

Weapon Kata also allows a character to use Chi Defense, and Monk Attacks (multiple attacks, and multiple foes - from the sidebar next to the profession description) with a kata weapon.

Does Weapon Kata allow a character to use the Monk Attacks ability even if he's not a monk?
I suppose a magician might, he admitted, but a gentleman never could.

Does Weapon Kata allow a character to use the Monk Attacks ability even if he's not a monk?

Short answer is no. If he does not have access to those abilities from some other source, he does not gain them through the kata. What the kata does is that it allows him him to use those abilities (if he has them) with the kata weapon.
