System for Character Backrounds?
« on: August 28, 2009, 07:01:38 AM »
Hello,
I am wondering what system of character back round generation do you use.  I see advantages to both the training packages and Talent Law back round strengths and flaws.

(I was at first planning on having this be a poll, but I couldn't figure out how to set up a poll topic).

Well I use the old Rm2 way. Background options and then you roll randomly to see wha you get. Try looking at RoCoI that has been rereleased for more tables.

One of my tools that works well to fire the players (and my own) imaginations requires creation of a family tree.  I want mother and father and brothers and sisters and a few aunts and uncles, grand parents, then "who were your neigbors, best friend, classmates, etc."  This works particularly well when starting with level one characters and is always useful when a party will be playing in and around their home town, as it provides the GM with quick and easy friends, foes, duties, responsibilities and the working in of repercussions for flaws and talents that promote PC growth and the storyline.

No one is born in a vacuum, yet to many adventuring parties develop that feel.  Let them meet their mothers favorite cuzin Hester who is now in a bad way with the local theives guild/gang, and make him really unlikable but holding a letter from mommy dearest begging her brave and strong son to help her good cousin in his need against such nasty local thugs in the big city.  And if your PC took some lame flaw like SENSE OF DUTY: FAMILY, so much the better.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

I like to work with the PC on a background story as they may not know all the info about the play area or may have taken something I said wrong in the pre-game.

As to background options and talent points. I use talent points and use a custom chart for talents and flaws.
