orc BMR question
« on: January 10, 2009, 03:09:01 PM »
I am part way through writing a spreadsheet for making NPCs & have struck a problem with the Orcs BMR. They have a BMR of 16 [stat bonus of 1'] meaning base of 15. Their description does not mention Blazing Speed.
1)   are they meant to have Blazing Speed?
2)   do they have a racial bonus to BMR of +5?
3)   am I missing something really obvious?

thanks!

It is likely just a typo (after this long, I don't really remember how the BMRs for the monsters were built, tho' I do remember that some of them (like the 4 legged ones were given bonuses because of the extra legs).

Orcs are as tall as humans (say an average of 6'). this gives them base of 10', and then a stat of 75 for quickness gives them +1'. What most likely happened is that the 75 gives a +5 stat mod, and for some reason that got added the BMR as well.

How about the lizardman? BMR 14 [height as human base 10 & +1 for Qu75].
Seems to be 3 BMR points short.
is is a bonus for being tailed or a similar problem?
cheers

You can presume that since all of the creatures were being done at the same time (stats included), that IF there are others that seem to have discrepancies (and are not quadrupeds), then it is likely a similar problem.

What is amazing is that none of our HARP playtesters caught it, and that neither has anybody else in the approximately 4-5 years that HARP has been out....

If we find discrepancies, should we re-do the BMR?

Up to you.  ;D

In most situations, it won't really matter all that much.

At one time there was a collection of the errata and FAQ's....

Would it be possible to set up some "stickied" topics at the top of each systems section for each individual product? Then each post could be added or edited to post known errors.   A single topic for HARP 3000 may have a post that reads:
Incorrectly calculated BMR's - Correct BMRs listed below:
orc - 11
lizardman - 11
etc.

Similar topics could be set up for RMC, RMSS, Cyrdaon, Echoes, etc. with the errata/FAQ being updated only by Moderators based upon proposed errata posts on the boards...

That would be awesome!

Works for me -- Thom -- take this discussion to the Mods forum, and we can work out methods of maintaining uniform posting styles and so forth.  ;D

I came across this awhile ago and in my monster generator spreadsheet - rules are on the front page (on the vault - shameless plug) I have a set of rules and guildlines for calculating BMR - a lot of it drawn from discussion around the boards.

It covers humanoid, quadrupeds, wormers, flyers, gliders, multi legged and swimmers and also allows for fast and slow species.

I use it as it gives me a standard and reliable way to work out BMR .

If you can compile the BMR's that are believed to be incorrect in the text, I'll get them verified and post it into the errata page.
