Arcane Companion: Arcane Forces: Flying I
« on: October 13, 2008, 09:08:12 PM »
Hey folks,

Anyone know why Flying I on Arcane Forces (pg 50) has the following restriction "While Fly is active... normal movement is not allowed" while Lofty Bridges Fly spells do not?

And what does that mean? If I Fly, stop and take a step, the spell dissipates? Stops me?

Please advise,
Old Man

No idea...flavor maybe. In general the higher level Arcane flying spells are rather powerful so maybe there is some logic in that the have extra limitations.

I have always ruled that the spell dissipates if the character land.

Old Man,
IMO I think they wanted to put a little bit of balance back into fly and not allow people to land..hide and then fly again after a time period. Also you might want to check the combined RM rulings [I forget the URL] and see if that description is added to the errata for flying spells.

As a side note I think you could have a spell caster maintain concentration in the back of there mind and then fly off the ground again. But they would have to use the skill and I would provide a mod for what ever had happened to them and the amount of time they spent on the ground.

Also, it reflects the "less controlled" nature of Arcane. You can't just switch flight on and off, you have to cancel it to not be flying. At least, that's one possible interpretation.

If you fly at land height is like normal movement, but at flying pace, see that this not limit movement while riding as you move with the riding creature with no problem.
