Mage Armor- Am I blind?
« on: December 01, 2010, 12:08:34 PM »
In a bout of insanity, I let my group talk me into running HARP so they could see what it's like.  I've bought as many of the books as I could find and have been putting everything together to get started.

My problem is that I can't find the spell Mage Armor anywhere.  College of Magics states that it's in the core rulebook, yet I can find it no where in the main book.  Can anyone tell me where to find this?

Thanks!

Well, that explains it.  My rulebook is only 160 pages.  #3000.  I take it there was a revised edition?

Thanks!

There was within a few months of the original publication of HARP, and they have the same stock number. (I have both.)

The spell durations were all shortened between 160-pager and Revised version. For a Mage Armor equivalent use either Steel Skin (from Warrior Mage, in both versions) or Tree Skin from CoM.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

SHORTENED the durations?  And here I thought spell durations were already absurdly low.  Well, I suppose that's what house rules are for.

Immediately after I found out about the updated book I went to ICE to order a new copy.  I got my original book as a used copy via Amazon, and there's no indication of multiple versions.  A new ISBN would have solved that problem right off.

Ahh Well, water under the bridge.  I'm looking forward to the new book.

Chuck-

I have a 'house-rule' for durations. Using the College of Magic rules for spell duration scaling...

+4    5 rounds per rank
+6   10 rounds per rank
+8    1 minute per rank
+9   10 minutes per rank
+10 1 hour per rank (limited to certain spells)

So... without exception, I allow any UTILITY spell to be scaled up to 10 minutes per rank. On a spell by spell basis, I allow the 1 hour per rank if it seems *reasonable* for that spell. I haven't had too many play balance fubars in 4+ years of HARP.

For attack spells (fear, etc) I generally don't allow the errata'd scaling (purely for play balance reasons).

I love HARP - it is very adaptable - and most EVERYONE (it seems) brews up their own version with house rules, selection of combat rules, etc.
It is better to be lucky than good, but it is *best* to be both.

When in fear, when in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout!

Yup! (As an example)
I am in the process of replacing the Profession system (for the last 6 months or so, on/off) to allow for more personalization/customization.
Instead of making a 'Fighter' and picking some weapons, talents and saying 'The theme is 'this'...
You choose a Realm, then a base Profession, then a Focus. Each gives skill areas, talents, etc...overall, the power level is on par with the Core, but with more versatility, especially given the Perk system that I have dredged up from my old Homebrew (Where each character gets contacts, gear and favors based on who/what they are).

My friend David's character, for example.

Realm:...Of Arms
Profession: Gunner
Focus: Pistoleer

Sorry, OT.

Anyways, Harp is a damned fun game, to be sure.
