Title: What should Terry do next?
Post by: Terry K. Amthor on June 13, 2008, 07:47:12 AM
I'm done with Xa-ar! (Barring any last few edits) and now I don't know what to do with myself. Suggestions?

Congratulations!!!!!!!

I would suggest to concentrate on Jaiman. It would be beautiful to have at least on continent completly developed. And for sure such an old continet such as Jaiman!
So conjuring the map in my mind there could be something like:
U-Lyshak and southern Saralis
or
Ulor and the Wilderness of Ly-Aran
or
Eternal Darkness in NW Jaiman (containing the old Iron Wind, Quellborn and also the Lunak area)

I?m really looking forward to get my hands on Xaar!

Wow, super great Terry!    I'd wait to say Nice Job until I read it but I have complete faith, so Nice Job!  Can't wait to see it.

I think the rest of Emer would be great.   Although Artifacts & Lost Technology might be a useful and hopefully quick, diversion from the typical sourcebooks.  I figure there's a some already written from the old Addendum that many folks no longer have access to.   And I figure it would probably write quicker, and be a bit shorter, then a regional sourcebook.

So my vote went to Emer.

I voted Emer 3 because my current game is set in Emer. But anything you can write is good for me.

Honestly, I'd like to continue reading When gods forget and Shadowstone and run modules with another book for Urulan, and The Alliance, and Vashaan Domain, and the war against Vulth Horde, and Artifacts, and (got the message?  ;D)

Thanks for the info, I'll be check the forums to know when it's available to buy.

Hullo,

Good thing aye! Voted Emer, but would rather see U-Lyshak or Urulan. Anyways, I'll buy anything that is Kulthea.

Cheers!

I voted for Emer III, just because I want to see what's hiding in those Jinteni ruins called "the lost city".

This sounds excellent Terry - how lengthy are the adventures?  Are they similar to what was in Eidolon or more like Emer I/II (which were more like a paragraph or two of ideas)?

They vary in length from the Emer ones to a few which are fairly involved. Some are more exploration, while some are more interaction. Overall though, adventures start on page 41 and run through page 106. There may actually be more than 16, as some are linked.

I voted Emer III, but any of the usual suspects : Emer III, Emer IV or Artifacts would do the trick of getting me a fix of SW stuff :D :D

I would like to introduce a new option. Something like "33 Outstanding Personalities of the Third Age"
And each and every described with the full history

My my, it's looking like Emer is the big winner, though I'm pleased some people still want to see some more Shadowstone. I have a feeling it will be both of those, maybe that SpaceMaster story (just cause of poor Patrick's backstory).

Now go out and buy Xa-ar! And please take a moment to review it!   ;)

Emer 3.

Shadowstone is great, but is not as useful as EmerIII will be.

I'd love to see Emer III, though Urulan would be a close second...

Some first impressions:
the overall design is fine, some nice handout, nice pictures, well done.
Reading through the content tabel really made me curious-fantastic, at the end information about the Iron Wind, Ulor,... a lot of stuff I was waiting a long time for.
I first concentrated on the chapter "Setting". And at the moment, without having read the adventur section, I?ve really mixed feelings about the book. Basically there some really nice new ideas, new forces and stories generated.
On the other hand there is again an attitude not to deal at all with details and if so game statistics are more concentrated on than backround information. For example section 5.3. "Forces of Ulor". App 1 and a half pages, the introduction of a new "Lady of Ulor" and some new Strike Team. Lenghty describtions of fighting styles. But nothing at all about details of Ulor.
It gives the expression that to add something new (with really, really good ideas) renders the further detail work on the older ideas unnecessary. Now I?m looking forward for the adventure section.

I voted for new ShadowStone chronicles...
As they are the only futures visions that we can have.

I remember a vote like this before and I went for Urulan.

Pretty sure it won the vote back then too!.....but it's not an option this time. :-[

Out of the options given I'll vote for Artifacts 'cos I remember you had started it before so maybe its a smaller project (therefore faster?) than the others.....not to mention its one I particular want to see!

As "All of the above" wasn't an option, I voted for Emer III. What would Artifacts & Lost Technology be like? Similar to Treasures of Middle Earth, where a lot of the material was from previously published work, or totally new stuff, or maybe a rewrite of old stuff or some combination?

The only published stuff that could wiggle it's way in Artifacts and Lost Technology is what can be found in the Atlas Addendum of the Emer box. ( well, there's a few bits scattered here and there in all the books, the the main part is in the AA )
And unless you're interested in the RM2/SM2 stats for a beta drone or an omega drone ( and I have no idea what you're going to do with them ;D ) most of the rest is described in other books.
But my memory might be faulty in that, it's been so long I've toyed with these things...

but any sourcebooks for kulthea would be great.

I voted artifacts because every once in a while i read the dreaded sentence: "more about that in lost artifacts" :)

Definitely Emer III for me, as this is the continent on which almost all the adventures I run take place.

I've just finished the first read of the book, at first glance I loved the layout, that always prefered instead of the new ICE "a la D20", it's easier to read and cheaper to print. The cover is nice and the art from mr.Tibaud it's damn good.

Bon courage m.Tibaud, votre art c'est excellent.

The quality of the content it's as usual, lots of new ideas, lots of small tips that give flesh to this world, and several adventures to work with. The only thing I know my players will tell me if I run these games, it's that everybody in Kulthea has a hidden agenda, everywhere there are cabals, secret orders, etc. But I like it that way. ;D

Layout: 9
Art and maps: 9
Content: 9 (only Jaiman & Eidolon are 10)  ;)

There are quite a few places where something similar is written. eg, Isle of Fire in Emer I. Whilst I don't expect any proper fleshing out of these things soon, are there any hints as to what they might be. So, if necessary, something could be created (or something existing hammered into shape) by fans.

Thanks fac!

Hope you'll post your review elsewhere.  :-)

Well I guess I can't argue about Eidolon especially. It's more isolated so was easier to do in some ways, but that city map was a labor of love. I worked over that on my drawing board with pen and inks and brush for months. But that was before the current technology.

And Cabals, secret orders? Well. Doesn't that make it more interesting?  ;-)

Southeast. It is much less densely settled than the rest and rather wild. But there used to be civilizations there... and there is the Isle of Jade.

I voted Emer III but I'll take anything...

I really liked your backstory for the Earth Wardens and the Coral Roads.

Shadow World continues to be a fascinating meld of Fantasy and Science Fiction.  It's better than a lot of Novels out there and in many ways it's the narrative that keeps me coming back for more.  Please keep it up.

More ?

Thanks in advance,

Although both Emer III and Artifacts & Lost Tech would be nice, I'd actually prefer for Terry to stay on Jaiman and really work on the details. Maybe small adventure modules that describe a certain area, or perhaps some city modules, or nations modules?

Allo allo!

This may be a bit off of your usual track, Terry (and Rasyr, and the rest), but...

What about a RM2 "workbook"?  This would be a set of intelligently crafted  documents designed to make the pen-and-paper "recordkeeping" of RM2 easier -- tracking activities in the round, including combat, parrying, DB, and shield; tracking encumbrance and maneuver penalties; tracking damage and breakage to equipment; determining the difficulty and modifiers for a variety of common maneuvers; easy-to-use indexes and summaries of rules; and a section on integrating rules fluidly into play.  This latter portion might include a number of examples, much as the ones found in the old RM2.  Get feedback from this forum on what's needed, and use these suggestions to determine what people need to get the most out of RM2.

See, I love RM2 -- LOVE it.  But I'm overwhelmed by all the rules and modifiers.  Don't get me wrong.  I adore the complexity, and want to become fluent enough to use it as it was intended -- to create a realistic and compelling world.  But diving back in at age 40, and with 4 kids and 2 businesses to manage, I need time-savers.

Terry, I'm not alone.

The product could come with a limited license to reproduce the documents for personal use, and perhaps even a CD-ROM with PDFs.  And you could sell the PDFs individually for those who want to "pick and choose".

It would also be great to read about the techniques of a top-rate RM Gamemaster in his own words -- both the imaginitive and the technical.

Come on, guys.  You have a BRILLIANT system.  Make it more accessible to those of us who REALLY want to follow you in.

Thanks!

CMC

I 2nd that notion.  There should be a SW lite that rips you right into the game world, and then can be expanded on later.  I GM and have not enough time to do intro sessions etc. to warm up new players...
Title: Re: What should Terry do next?
Post by: RandalThor on August 27, 2009, 11:44:07 AM
Yeah, with this system (really any of the ICE systems) anything that would speed up the creation of adventures, NPCs, monsters, & everything else would be a big help. Having premade forms, especially ones that can be filled in and printed and reused would go a long way to speeding things up for a GM - and in game play.

But for SW I want to see a Powers of Light & Darkness-esque book dedicated to each of the main powers, good, bad, & otherwise. With more detail and more examples of members/followers, especially with maps and descriptions of bases!! Love them!!!

I got some nice 26 hour days I can sell ya. Special this week on two weeks for one week´s price :D

Was checking out the SM story and I like the pre-story details as "this was written largely on a thing called a Kaypro that had two 5.25" floppy drives, no hard drive, 64K of RAM and ran on an operating system called CP/M." No idea what a kaypro was but it sounds old, and thereby I can imagine it was horrible to work on ;D
