Title: Arcane Magehunter Strength II
Post by: providence13 on February 25, 2018, 02:07:59 PM
The Arcane Co is a good book, yet riddled with typos.
Is Strength II, Magehunter Base supposed to be 1rnd/lvl?

Yeah, it's Strength II and Arcane so it will be more powerful than Strength II from the Monk Base List, but they could've renamed it.. Or make the Monk spell be 1rnd/lvl. They are both 8th lvl spells. Both Professions have PP Dev of 8 DP.

Doubling hits and Strength stat bonus is huge, but darn expensive for a Monk, for only 1 rnd.
And the Magehunter version makes the spell crazy tough at 1rnd/lvl.
Granted, the Monk could possibly get Strength IV (not likely..) and the Magehunter is restricted to only Strength II, but it's 1 rnd/lvl!

Anyone deal with this? Is it too powerful? Did one Profession change how you look at the other?

I take it that the spell is Instantaneous? If so, 1rd/level does seem quite excessive.

If it's not Instantaneous, a 1 round duration would make it barely worth using.

That spell list is pretty good, but in the overall picture, I felt like the magehunter was underpowered. Containing Ways, Power Lore, and Spell Tracker have a ton of holes and extremely narrow functionality. (Merging Power Lore and Spell Tracker into a single spell list would be a good update, and Containing Ways into one of the other lists as well.) If you aren't actually hunting one single individual mage, you're definitely not getting your full value of your DP. So overall, I don't think it's a problem. It could be an issue if you are letting people pick and choose base lists from other professions, in which case that spell is big and also they get pretty early access to Haste.

Looking at individual base lists apart from the professions other base lists is not appropriate.  Each profession is balanced around their lists and skill costs - granted balance subjective.  But yeah it is a nice list.
