RMU One-Shot in the Warhammer setting
« on: November 02, 2024, 09:24:40 AM »
Adventure background:
Traveling to one of the towns of Reikland, the PCs will stop at an ancient monastery [MAP] dedicated to the goddess Shallya, used as an orphanage. The monastery is protected by solid stone walls and a large garrison of soldiers: there should be no danger. At least that's what the PCs think.

One of the boys in the monastery has developed Lycanthropy and has managed, miraculously, to keep it hidden from the clerics.

During a 'haunted' night in which the moon Morrslieb stands tall and green in the sky, the call of the gods of Chaos becomes irresistible for the boy: he opens the sturdy reinforced wooden door from the inside, allowing a group of Fimir to enter, in the middle of the night, the monastery.

An intense battle with the garrison follows: the Fimir prevail and carry out a massacre. Some of the boys escape, taking refuge in the orphanage's basement.

The PCs arrive after the fact, during a rainy night: they will find the gate open and will have to eliminate the remaining Fimir and save the few surviving orphans. (and maybe the wolf-like boy also: their choice)

Questions:
[assuming a group of 5 level 7 PCs (2 melee and 3 spell casters) ....]
how many monsters should I insert?
[the skin will be 'Fimir' but .....]
which creature should I use?

Just remember that in RM, the number of enemies matters a lot -- probably more than in say D&D -- because flank and rear and surprise attacks get such higher bonuses and can be devastating. So, if the enemies outnumber the PCs, even though the enemies might be inferior to the PCs, that can be quite challenging.

What if Fimir == Orc, greater

And in the monastery there are 2 remaining groups of Fimir:

1 Fimir at the walls spotting incoming troubles. (It's difficult to surprise him)

3 Fimir at the ground floor searching for the entrance of the underground basement. (they could be easily surprised by the PCs)

too much? Maybe Fimir == Orc, lesser is better?

The number of enemies the players can handle also depends on the layout of the combat location. Fighting in a dungeon when there are multiple choke-points is a very different thing from getting surrounded on a field.

I think they will fight in some of the rooms. The PCs could use the door in order to fight the Fimir one by one but this is difficult.
So we could assume open ground.

The PCs of my players are level 4. I lowered the staring level after some thoughts.
After some consideration I think I will inserto 2 type of encounters in the orphanage:

1. A little group of powerful enemies.
For example: a group of 2 Fimirs (i.e Orc greater)

2. A huge swarm of very inferior enemies.
A tribe of snotlings (minions: each not fumbled attack kill one ot them) that serve the Fimirs as cannon fodder.

I know 2 is the most dangerous option but I want my players feel the difference with D&D. They should observe how numerical inferiority is dangerous and how important is to correctly maneuver their PC in the battlefield.
