Swimming in armor
« on: January 14, 2008, 08:58:46 AM »
Swimming difficulty + xSteps
+
3 x Maneuver penalty

=====>

MxMP/MnMP
soft leather : -20 / 0   x3  +1diff (+20) ===> -80 / -20
studded leather : -40 / -5  x3   +2diff (+40) ====>-160 / -55
chain: -60/-10   x3  +3diff (+60) ====> -240 / -90
plate/chain: -80/-15  x3  +4diff (+80) ====> -320 / -125
plate: -100/-20  x3  +5diff (+100) ====> -400 / -160

Don't you think maluses for Swimming in armor are too much ?

Do you think using two combined mechanisms (+x diff steps and X3 Man.Penal.) is a good and esthetical think ? I don't think so...

(IMHO X3 man pen. is a lot too much. X1 is fair enough.)

Where's the problem? You normally wear armor only w/ MnMP. And you definitely can't swim in a full plate. -20 to -55 is possible. All above is sheer folley and almost ends at the ground of a river/see.

ps: we usually use MxMP instead of diff for armor by piece.

Do you mean you only apply 3*MxMP ?

PS: i really think that a minimum of -55 with a  studded leather armor is too much.
-55 is (almost) "Extremely Hard" => that's what i would say about swimming with a Chain, not a rigid leather armor.

No. Armor maneuver penalty x3 apply and instead of a difficulty staging we use MxMP (it's the same for armor sets but it differs a bit to armor by piece)

And studded leather ... "Rigid Leather, Hard Leather (including
armor made from furs and hides), Studded Leather,
Brigandine Armor, Scale Armor (leather)"
# it is what it is: rigid
# have you ever tried to swim with wet fur worn?
# metal studs or lames ..
# interlocking metal plates ..
# shaped metal pieces ..

But if you need leather armor for a sea campaign, special crafted with a reduce xx to swim penalties (houserule?)

Otherwise use ML (p. 45) and a superior workmanship bonus (decrease MxMP and MnMP) or special materials. (ie integrated hog-bladders** inside the leather armor)

** correct expression?

Choc is definitively right. I've had some occasions to swin in fatigue dress... much more difficult and tiring than in swimming suit. In a rigid armor taking in a lot of water, I don't want to try.
Now there's a plan : we go there, we blast him, we come back...
