Hi All,

I'm still grappling with installing it on my Mac. Should I use WineSkin or WineBottler? They both seem compatible with 10.6.8, so what is the difference? As a dedicated Mac person who has only reluctantly used a PC at work (and only then as a second computer), naturally I don't want to have a lot of extraneous stuff on my machine that might mess up my baby. I'd like to try FG as a player first and get a feel for it...

Trying it out as a player is easy as the FG Con starts this Friday.

...and I'll get back on trying it out in Wine (I think Wine Bottler is the way forward from reading all the stuff about it last week) - I got a little distracted with some Emer map or something. ;)

I am running a game on Saturday for the FGcon starting at 14:30 (UTC) and anyone can try it out: that's the purpose of the virtual convention, to showcase how useful Fantasy Grounds is for running your game online.

There will be a dedicate Teamspeak server with "rooms" for each game so there is a social aspect to the con also. There will be other systems and rulesets represented so it would be nice for Rolemaster fans to make their presence felt.

Here are the two games running at the FGcon:
Saturday

Sunday

You are the PC/Mac tech guru here; the only Mac tech place I worked, we avoided all things PC, so I defer to your judgement! However, that Emer map thingy... well, don't let anything else distract you from THAT!  :D

I definitely hope to have FG up and running by then [with craggle's help and advice, as I have a PC phobia] on my Mac and would love to participate. Even though I am one of the old guard RM designers, I always found character creation a little... intimidating, even though you could create a really wonderful character with it. And an old RM battle could run for hours in real time (though granted, in Pete's campaigns, there were often multiple plots going on).

So I'd love to check this out and see how the mechanics work. I'm certainly happy to be there to support Rolemaster! It looks beautiful and so detailed from the demos.

I would be happy to stay on after the game on Saturday and give you a mini tutorial of the features of FG and the Rolemaster ruleset in particular.

With the recent updates, making a character is a breeze. A lot of the pain has been taken out of it. One click, all the stats can be rolled. Another click, all spells of that profession can be added. But combat is where rolemaster excels in FG.

So, by the silence, I am assuming you have all the players you want, Terry. Oh well. (Picks up dice bag and goes home...  :-X )

Don't be sad. I have no players yet. I don't want to get ahead of myself.  :)

So Craig, how is the Mac guru help going for Fantasy Grounds? We are holding Terry a place in case he wants to join in on Saturday.

I'm hoping he will join us - but it was DrZeus' tutorial that would have done it. I've successfully followed it and now have it running in wine ...mmm, that sounds tasty.

I've not yet heard whether Terry's managed it or if he's had any problems. Finger's crossed.

I have found that running windows with VirtualBox on Mac OS or linux to be easier and more stable than wine.

Does that allow you to run Windows Programs without a Windows License?

No, you still need a windows license as you are really running windows rather than wine which is just emulating the environment (which is why its more difficult to get it to work)

I personally use Parallels (with Windows XP) as my emulator but will be using Fantasy Grounds in my new Wine install this weekend. It seems to work fine with my little play of it.

I have to say that if there wasn't a step by step tutorial on how to do it, I would have had great difficulty getting it to work but we'll see whether Parallels can be retired after this weekend.

Are you going to join us this weekend at the Fantasy Grounds Con?

Craggles,

whatever setup you use seems to work a treat. I have never encountered any issues with you connecting to either Gerhard or my games since we started a year ago.

Whatever you're doing, keep doing it. If you want to try something new, I can run a quick test before the weekend of gaming (then you can help me with a few final touches of the pregen characters ::) )

Hi Brian,

Terry's up and running with Dr Zeus' instructions but we'd like a quick test to make sure it's all good to go. ...and then I can help you with the finishing touches to the characters. :)

Is there an orientation event for new players at the Con? Are you playing the current RMC release or is it a beta of an upcoming one?

Alas, no I'm booked all weekend. I'm hoping to start using FG again in the next several months though, I haven't checked out changes to the ruleset in nearly two years now.
