(Privateers) Cost and weight for armored vac suit?
« on: January 21, 2012, 04:43:44 PM »
I've combed the books (Privateers and Tech Law) for cost and weight for armored vacc suits but both sources state: varies for both.

A normal vacc suit weighs 50 kg and costs 10k.

What would be the cost and weight in the default Privateers tech level?

Use best judgment dependent on location.  In core regions, cost would be less than in outer regions.

Full body armor today weighs about 15 to 20kg.  I would use that as a start.  I would say that an armor vac suit at TL18 would weigh at least 70kg.  At most, I would not drop weight below 60kg.

For cost, armoring something can raise its price by up +100% (perhaps even more) of original cost.  Thus, I would say that an armor vac suit would cost at least 12.5K (+25%).

But that is my humble and honest opinion.

Well, unless somebody chimes in officially I'm inclined to add the weight of the armor to the vacc suit for the sake of simplicity.

Not that it much matters, once the PCs' ship goes down in the steaming jungle the pilot will don lighter armor.

IIRC there is a rule somewhere that says products decrease after time. But the official cost and weight are those listed on the tables in SM:P Main book as the SM:P TL:EM is also somewhat generic in nature.
I am behind on some projects so I cannot dig into my books right now.

Some gear costs and weights are reduced to 10% of their original values at higher TLs but I believe weapons and armor aren't.

The cost and weights of the armored vacc suit in both TL: EM and SM:P list 'varies'.

The entry on pg 50 of SM:P TM for Vac Suit is 50kg and Exo-Skeletal Armored Vac Suit says add +50kg.

I think what I would do is reduce the weight of the Vac Suit accordingly and provide the armor for free, with the note that it cannot weigh less than the armor normally would + some %. Maybe +5% or 10% at TL 25.
