Need advice for hazardous environment.
« on: October 12, 2010, 08:01:35 AM »
Hi guys.

My PCs are about to walk in a volcanic undergruund area in our campaign.
You typical hot vapors/bubbling lava/leaping flames/toxic smoke stereotypical place.

There they will face some combat, but also, I want to give them something other to chew in the form of hazardous conditions.
What do you suggest, out-of-the-books, for protracted stay in such a place?

Thanks a lot.

Do you use Exhaustion? They will be expending Exhaustion points like there's no tomorrow simply to walk in that envioronment.

On top of that, every maneuver they try will be 2 or 3 steps harder than normal

You also have sulphuric vapours (clouds of noxious gases that turn to sulphuric acid in your lungs).

There will be fine gravel/stones making movement difficult. lava tends to form porous/crumbly substrate and may collapse, dropping them in a river of lava underneath ... if they are lucky, there will be a bubble of air between them and the cooling lava underneath.

The heat may prevent them breathing

Unfortunately not.

I was thinking of something more like "RR vs Heat/OR penalty" approach. Suggestions?

You could do that too.

Succeed against the RR => increase penalties by 1 difficulty level (or -25 to all mm/sm/ob)
Fail => increase penalties by 2 difficulty levels (or -50 to all mm/sm/ob);
5% chance of passing out due to exertion every time you push yourself (fumble = pass out)
Fumble => increase penalties by 3 difficulty levels (or -75 to all mm/sm/ob);
25% chance of passing out due to exertion every time you push yourself (fumble = pass out)
