Title: Most addictive RPG's of all time
Post by: dutch206 on March 09, 2016, 06:03:40 PM
The website "Ranker" is running a poll called " the most addictive RPG's of all time".  MERP, Which hasn't been in production since the early 90's, is ranked #29.  Rolemaster (all versions) is ranked #50.

One guess which game got #1.

well.. it can only be Dungeons and Dragons. Although having only played DnD 4th Edition it should never have been that high.

I only see "best" and not "most addictive". http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/greatest-pen-and-paper-rpg_s-v1 (http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/greatest-pen-and-paper-rpg_s-v1)

As for 4th edition, if it is "most addictive", I think including a bad trip in there is highly appropriate.

It seems that 4th ed is in first place, I could be wrong but that looks like a cover of 4th ed. That was simply the worse edition of D&D ever. I added HARP to the list and it is currently #262. I of course voted for the games I played and liked and down voted the games I played and did not like.

I wasn't sure what the rules were about linking to non-Rolemaster sites.

Yeah, there's no way 4th edition was the best ever.  (Yes, I was part of the "Edition Wars" debate.)  Still not sure how I feel about 5th edition.

Right now, I'm looking into the possibility of a Shadow World campaign set in Palia.  That's far enough from Emer that I can ignore the meta-plot and just enjoy myself.

It's not a very good list. D&D 5E is on twice, so is Toon. I take the top entry as D&D generically, and apparently no one liked 4E enough to add it as its own version. Ranker is really just clickbait.

yes, I noticed that as well..
The Site allows members to add entries to any list.
And of course, Some people only look at the first 50 instead of looking at the whole list to see if their option is there... Or don't use the search function at the bottom to see where in the list their Option falls, then just add their own.. so duplicates end up happening.

Lists like that are highly subjective and skewed towards more popular games despite addictive nature. And how does one measure addiction? Money spent? The intensity of enjoyment (high) from playing the game? Duration and length of use of product? Or maybe inability to forget the game once game play is taken away or ceased? Some smaller produced games might have highly addictive traits, yet not gain votes due to the small production and audience.

Everyone should go there an at least vote for all the ICE/GCP stuff. HARP is picking up speed. It went up to 247 since I posted it at 262 yesterday. HARP is their only current RPG game as all the RM stuff is being updated with RMU soon enough.

Still, Rolemaster is on there under one title which I just assume covers all versions.

Bruce? Did you remove HARP? From that list? I don't see it any longer?

Hm. This poll does not paint a pretty picture for RM. When I looked it ranked #46, but it was the least popular among the top 50… By that I mean it got 1,83 negative votes for every positive vote, which is the worst rate on the top 50. So almost twice as many people clicked Down on RM as those that clicked Up.
We have to move down to the places between 51 and 100 to find games worse off (and some are significantly worse off with three times as many Down as Up).
I suppose the designers are working hard on making RMU more friendly to the non-hardcore RM fans for a reason

(And my favorite, Spacemaster is at 239th place with 4,7 negative votes for every positive…  Sob  :'()

I also find it interesting that MERP is at 29th.

I always Wonder if it was the Fact that The Tolkien World was what helped people actually Get past the "first Impressions" and "stigma" of the Rolemaster style system to give MERP a try and Realize how Great and easy it actually was.

I know a few people Myself that had a negative outlook on Rolemaster, then Played MERP, then Transferred to Rolemaster and Loved it.

It's To bad we don't have something like Middle Earth for RM today to help draw players.

I know there are a Lot of New systems today that people Play just because of the Name attached to it. Like the Firefly RPG. I like the Campaign Information, But, IMO the system developed for it sucks. Some of these New Games seem to Come up with some Arcane New system Just to have a New Unique system for their Game. Yet, as complicated as they are, People Flock to it because of the Name attached to it.

1h e, 2h,, 1hc,,  missile, animal and directed spell...six tables. Condensed crit  tables and the mm table. Simpler.

I now a large number of people that started in MERP and then added some complexity later.  MERP was a great starting set to learn on.

I always liked MERP.  I still play it, along with HARP.  We did expand the available MERP professions with the optional rules and the spells lists from RM Spell Law.

I really liked MERP(the first "professional" game I've ever played/GMed), love HARP and have mixed feelings about RM, although the only edition I ran was RMFRP. I mean it's a really great game, but it's kind of like Dream Theater music in two ways, one it's very hard to get into it at first so it's understandable a number of people don't like it and two it has some unnecesary complications, like the multiple maneuver charts or the whole "one table per weapon"(I know they are optional). Once you can get past it and create the characters without dying in the process, it's really great. But you can't ask everyone to be willing to make that journey. And it's certainly a challenge for those who jump on it without having played MERP or HARP.

It's easier to see why MERP is in there. It's not just the Tolkien thing(the One Ring is a lot lower on the list), but it's a very straightforward game. Character creation was fast, even if the price for it was a little cookie cutter characters but newbies don't care about flexibility, in fact the less options the better. The mechanics have all been improved with HARP, back then they were easy enough to run even for a 13 year old like myself back then.

Too bad seeing HARP that low though... I hope the new Bestiary and Cyradon come soon, otherwise it will be hard for new players to get into it.

And because I know Dream Theatre this made me laugh out loud.

Role Master 2d Ed. wasn't bad, my friends and I loved playing it (and even the 1st Ed. way back in the day) until we went back to MERP and then HARP, but we got overwelmed by the beast that was RMSS.  We never played RMFRP, so I don't know anything about it.

Just remember to HARP on my friends!   ;D

Overall, I have been very happy with ICE's products and I would like to have seen them higher up on the list.

RM2 still my favorite as well.

RMFRP is just a Revamp of RMSS  sort of an RMSS 2 .

I've played them all (as most of us have) and am just getting back into RMC after about a year in an RMSS campaign.
