Well, if you have a job to propose me, a french school around for my kids and a nice spot to call home, I'm your man.
If I stay longer in France, I'll end up on top of a barricade, waving a flag and throwing slingshots at policemen ready to to hit me for my own good. Slowburn in progress.

No, they just speak some kind of French, but they are not French. ;D
Once upon a time, they used to be French, but that was long ago. ;)

I don't think we're actually a part of the U.S. anymore.

Last time I checked, you were on the political map of the USA. But does it mean something ?

No.
Actually, New Orleans gov't has forsaken New Orleans.
And we all know what party is in charge of New Orleans.
I really don't want this to degenerate into a thread locking political debate, but the above statement (by Randal) can be argued against (quite convincingly too I might add).
Meanwhile, back on topic...
I was curious to see the ratio between "American" fans of ICE and European and other fans. Also, if any of you Europeans know, how popular is D&D in Europe and what kind of reception is 4e getting?
Remember, don't bash the company or game too hard, for Rasyr doesn't like that...
Thanks!

Fenrhyl Wulfson: If you are looking to get out of France, why ask for a French School? Just wondering. (And if that is your real name, IT IS SO COOOOOL!!!)
Because the teachings level in foreign french schools is top notch. Far beyond what one may expect to find in a french public school, or a US one (no offense meant).
And no, that's not my real name ^^ . My real name is not a mistery, it's Julien Buseyne. My second name is cool : Tea-nua-nua, tahitian for "rainbow".
For above : D&D 4 got a good reception but lost a part of its audience. It is performing well, but not as well as might have been expected.

I've noticed on other forums that they have flags of ones country in their posts. Thought that was a interesting addition, not sure if these forums support that feature?

There are some many alternative RPG in France (I don't know these games).
Me and my friends are a very small exception: we play (these times) HARP (my bro) and RolemasterC (me). These games have a poor audience in France.
D&D 3.5 did a big score (to me a good non perfect game).
D&D 4 not.
I don't like this new game with video game rules system. I played one session with a cleric of Pelor (my favorite god in Greyhawk...): I could'nt cast light spells: what a shame!!! ("tout naze" in french).

If Louis XV, XVI and Napoleon did let the English do what they wanted in America ( or hadn't sold the remaining territory to the Americans ), Detroit would be called Fort D?troit, New Orleans would still be La Nouvelle Orl?ans, and the whole Mississipi valley up to lake Huron would speak French. ;D

Hey,
Just wanted to thank everybody for participating in my little experiment.
Thanks!
-
I think, if your going to say nationality as a topic, you need a list of nationalities rather than continents.
so I've ticked my continent....
-
also Australia should be Australasia, so as to cover other islands in the region...
-
Do you really have to nit-pick me like that?
After I made the title and I realized I very well couldn't list all the countries, I simply listed the continents. I was sure that the fellow forum members would understand and, as many have done, list their country as well.
If you feel slighted or insulted by my simple, yet understandable error, rest assured that it wasn't my intention. I apologize and thank you for the advice that will help me the next time I create a topic/thread.
-
If it where down to me I'd be listed a Middletonian, and I wouldn't expect you to lest every town or village in the world ;)
I'm merely being nitpicky for the sake of it, I know you understand that one <chuckle>
it would be an interesting excersise to expand this topic though, perhaps listing languages you game in to see what translations would be profitable.
-
Boy that would be a big pole. What are there 167 nationalities now?

OK, I chime in late;
but better late than never.
< Germany, Berlin
And we have many US-states here in Germany:
Kalifornien, Texas etc.
The reason the people wanted to emigrate to the USA but could afford it.
So they left their town and founded a new one with their beloved name ...

I was just making a joke. Sorry it was taken seriously. New Orleans as being "a bit different" is a joke that long pre-dates Katrina.
Next time I'll remember to use a wink or a smiley. :)

As an inhabitant of one of those other islands, I agree ;D.

I just want to thank everybody for all the constructive criticism. I can assure all that if I ever find myself posting a poll ever again, that next endeavor will be better worded, with proper choices, due to the advice received.
Thank you.

I'm Canadian. Live in Ottawa. Gaming is not so big here, but I have found a nice little circle of folks to play with.

Boy that would be a big pole. What are there 167 nationalities now?
Well, FIFA has 207 members - which is quite a few more than the UN - so there should be at least that many nationalities.

That's a terrible thing to say!
No, it is not. You see, my girlfriend died in a hospital after a car crash. IF she survived, she would have to undergo a long healing process, and when we'd finally meet she'd probably would not be as attractive (or sexy) as I imagine her to be. Not to mention, it would have been hard for her to fly to America to eventually marry and live with me.
I see it that it is better for her to move on than to live a long mortal life in a broken body. Terrible thing to say? I don't think so. Death was a blessing, a mercy to Ann; not a curse.
-
You are justifying saying that she is better off dead based upon three issues -
1) She would have to undergo a long healing process
2) You might not find her attractive
3) She would have had difficulty flying to America to be with you
I intend no insult by this, but suggest you take a long hard look at your thought process...
Reason #1 is extremely short-sighted
Reason #2 is selfish and shallow
Reason #3 is both short-sighted and selfish
If I had someone I loved become badly injured in a car accident I would give anything to have them live, even if it meant the healing process would be long and tough (better than being dead), even if our love ended - I would still prefer her to live than die, especially if I loved her once, and again if our love ended it would still be wonderful to have her alive whether she could come to me or not - but then again, planes fly both ways and I would go to her.

Chosen, I'm going to leave it at that. She died in the hospital before I could know and before I could make any plans to fly to France to be at her side. Since we met on the Internet and since I was dirt poor at the time, I could not afford to fly there to see her. I only knew she suffered a terrible car accident before her brother told me the news.
Now, Anne is as much my inspiration to succeed and to attain Financial Freedom so I can fly to France and meet her family without any worries about money. You can judge me to be short-sighted, shallow, and selfish. Doesn't matter me, I know what is in my heart.

Chosen GM...
Perhaps we judged Elton too soon and a bit too harshly. We did not know the entire story, and we don't know Eltons feelings. I too thought what he said was callous, but after his explanation, I am not so quick to jump all over him.
Elton...
What you said seemed very callous and selfish to me. However, after your "explanation", I am not convinced you meant it as it came across. I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt...
-
I can't discuss Spirituality on the boards, Right Wing Wacko. Even though Spirituality has nothing to do with Religion, discussing my Spirituality would still seem to be religion to a lot of people. As callous and selfish as my "explanation" seems, it will have to do on a public board about gaming. It's not the whole Truth about how I felt when she actually died. In fact, in light of one of the posters' replies about 'nature' I made the right call.
So, it's callous and selfish for a reason. If you would like a real explanation, feel free to privately message me. :)
-
I discovered, in attempting another mega-giant poll, that polls will support 255 answers, no more. . . .so it is possible to actually create a "pick your nation" poll. . . .of course, keying it in would well and truely suck, trust me.
It's possible 255 might not make it, and require titles like "French Micronesia". . .there are dependancies, protectorates and colonial remnants that are quazi independant enough to rate their own citizenship which would probably create hundreds more "nations" than one might expect. (And saying you're "French" if you live on a tiny island 300 miles from australia would be less than clear.)
And no, I'm not in Antarctica. . . .that said though, I would not be surprised to find gamers there. . .not exactly lots of nightlife, and most of the folks down there are scientists and grad students, right in our demographic.
-
+1 to Europe.
I live in Sweden...
-
And now, that makes one European for each other in the world ! According to the poll at least :)
-
Hmmmm...
does anyone else other than me find it interesting that ICE seems to be more popular outside the USA than in it?
See, the reason I started this poll was because I always thought this was the case...
But all the poll does is show more traffic on the forum from overseas...
Anyone else care to comment?
-
It would a first step to compare Europe's total population and USA's population. That would give a basis for comparison.
-
I don't think population is the answer, I believe....oh my..how to say this politely.....hhhhmmmmmm. Here in America, the gamers seem to want things, uh, simpler. The easier the better, less thinking over more thinking. That is my opinion.
Also, we seem to like success - even when it really isn't success. Making all the "little" rolls that only get you 5-10% there each, seem to make *us* feel good. I mentioned this in another thread - forgot which one.
-
As for populations, European Union total population (that is actually 27 countries) is roughly 500 millions whereas US population is about 300 millions IIRC. So that may count for this result. However, I don't think the number of answers to this poll is high enough to be significant.
-
RM in the form of the-game-that-should-not-be-named was the #2 game system for a while, behind only AD&D. . . . .a lot of factors caused major disruption in the US that I'm not sure affected europe. . .like the strong tie of RPG products to comics at retailers, and the almost total combustion of the comic market in the early 90s that caused most "Hobby" stores to close and liquidate. . . .the shift after that in the US to where Mega Stores dominated the retail market. . .Barnes & Noble, Wal-Mart and a couple others. . . .which massively favored large RPG companies over small ones in that small ones either couldn't get their product out at all, or couldn't afford to stock enough shelves to get in, considering all unsold product would be returned after a few months. (If you need to produce enough product to put X copies on Y shelves, where Y = the number of Wal Marts nationwide, your up front first printing run had to be huge, all of them speculative copies, not sold copies.). . ..Those mega stores also discounted books, often out of profitability for small companies.
Did those factors apply in Europe? I suspect not.
-
I cannot answer you for sure. Living in a backwater village, I have turned entirely to the Internet to purchase RPG products and cannot say how the small retailers fare nowadays. BAck in the nineties, they were flourishing and most of my early products were purchased in those shops.
-
Another spaniard here. It seems that there are more people from Europe, i had bet that USA had more people here.

Finland, Helsinki.

It seems that there are more people from Europe, i had bet that USA had more people here.
I actually hypothesized that there would be more from Europe...
And it also seems that most of us are... middle aged...
-
American here. Just about everyone I know is monolingual and my German isn't good enough for gaming anyway.
-
Andalusia, Spain, Europe, Earth, Milky Way...
-
Another French here.
We play with character sheets and spell lists in English, about half the time my players will call the skill they want to use with its English name.
Most dreaded sentence at the table :
"Tout le monde me fait un jet d'Alertness !"
-
Lots of French and Americans. All good! Im from Norway, myselfe, which is pretty cold these days..
I guess other factors than nationality. e.g. education, sex, athletic (in)disposition etc, would better predict the propensity to become a gamer.
-
I guess other factors than nationality. e.g. education, sex, athletic (in)disposition etc, would better predict the propensity to become a gamer.
The nationality survey wasn't done to predict the propensity to be a gamer, but rather to see where ICE games are more popular. I had previously thought that ICE was more popular outside the US than within it, but as you can see, it is pretty close... and you can never be sure because not everybody who plays/enjoys ICE games will visit this website, and even if they do, they might not participate.
And IMHO, those things you listed have minimal influence on whether one is a gamer or not. I think it hinges more on interest and availability.
-
Denmark, so bow down to our supremecy!!
Supremacy? losing Norway (i.e. us) to Sweden (because of a silly, yet inevitable, alliance with Napoleon) is not a sign of supremacy... granted, being part of Denmark-Norway was only sort of silly, but being part of the Sweden-Norway "union" is perhaps one of the greatest jokes in history (the Swedish, and thus Norwegian, king didn’t even know our constitution and by mistake renounced his rule over Norway, good story that is)...
I long for the good old hey-days of the Kalmar-Union, that would’ve been a power to be reckoned with today I think.
so, for those who wondered, I’m Norwegian, all arrogant and full of myself. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebqdwQzmSHM&eurl=)

Not all gamers of North America live in the US. :P In my RPG club, we too use mainly English version of RPG games. But I saw one day a french version of Spell Law and was impressed by the quality of the translation. I mean there are often new words created with fantasy settings, how do you deal with them? And sometimes you need knowledge of some obscure field to understand the text...
Anyway, it's snowing today, so we may have a white Christmas!

Finnish here, from Helsinki. Other games are more popular here, especially Pathfinder and its infamous predecessors but I think RM is the best one anyway. There are several (at least 5) annual table-top RPG conventions here that I'd like to visit as an Order member next year, if you'll have me. ^^

I will remember never to say the names 'Simon de Montfort' or 'Innocent III' in your presence.

England, (alas slightly adrift from Europe), now, the real question, what language do you use when playing RM?
My guessing, is that the majority will use English, or use rulebooks written in English (or a slightly corrupted version thereof... ;) ) ..... what proportion use "Foreign" language translations for their games?

We're speaking french (for practical reasons), but we all use rulebooks written in English. I've been doing that since I started playing RPGs... fourty-two years ago or so (of course it would be fourty-two...) and see no reason to stop now. Except, of course, if the original book is in another language I happen to be proficient in (i.e. french).

Same here, we speak french when we play but we often use english for some spells or actions...

Australian. Grew up playing Rolemaster in Melbourne and fondly remember the easy availability of ICE products in the main gaming stores there in the late 80s through the mid-90s.
I'm curious about Australians and Kiwis who are not from the big cities - how did you discover ICE products back in the day? Did they even have well-stocked gaming stores in Dunedin or Perth back then? Let alone the rural areas.

Orginally from Dunedin, NZ. I got introduced to MERP by a school friend around age 12 way back in around 1985. Back then there were either one or two dedicated gaming stores in Dunedin that you could buy or order first MERP and then later on RM products from.
I would never say "well stocked" but yes from memory if you wanted to get a particular product you had a reasonable chance of finding it on a shelf back then or ordering it which would take a few weeks.

A follow-up poll of comfortable languages would be cool. And useful if anyone is ever going to localize a product, whether official or fan-made.
