Forced education?
« on: January 31, 2008, 03:17:57 PM »
Is there an easier way to force a mage to teach you his secrets except by using Mind Slave True @Lv20?
Mind Slave and Domination both need Concentration.

@Lv7-> Suggestion: Target will follow a single suggested action...

Suggestion -> "Teach me Light Law".

Why do you need a spell?

Intimidation, threats, leverage, kidnapping, offering to retrive something, offering payment ...

Or for someone like your avatar, just split his head in half and look inside for what you need  ;D

No reason in particular.
I'm just thinking some mages are difficult to convince, especially if you're not one of them (i.e. wrong profession).

Suggestion and command seems simple enough but you have to keep the mage from killing you at the same time. Sure he'll teach you but that doesn't mean he won't try to kill you for forcing him.
I guess a charm spell would take care of that...

So what spells and how would you use them?

I'd think you could get that information the same ways you could get any other information.

Like, how would you force someone to teach you how to swim?

Certainly sounds risky, but I'd think the methods would be essentially the same.

Depending on how leinent the GM is......

Sleep/K.O. the  mage and use Bard Base-Lores-Minds Lore ;D

Of course this would take weeks or months to get it all . Just keep the wizzard seddated and hire a girl to help "take care of Grandpa"   ie..cleaning/feeding/ect...

The info your after is "What is taught in the 1st class on List X, What is taught in the 2nd class on List X,ect...."

What are you going to do with that mage after you have effectively stolen the spell from him? It may not be exactly safe to leave an "annoyed" mage around after you have left.

I wouldn't try to force a spellcaster into teaching spells.
Since you dont know the spells, there's nothing that stops him from changing the spells just a bit to make them more dangerous for you. Imagine a small thing as +15 ESF every time you cast one of those spells. That could get really nasty when we're talking elemental attack spells.

Besides that killing a Mage is usually a bad idea. They have a tendency to have friends or allies that are also spell casters and spells like Vision Behind or Deaths Analysis/Deaths Delving can really ruin you plans.

Cormac Doyles suggestions might work a lot better than any spell and if you really cant come up with anything that works, walk away and find the spell list somewhere else.
I'm new here, but have played RM2 on and off for 20 years. :)

That's why forcing a mage is a bad idea. The trick is getting him to want to teach you the spell.

Maybe if you go to him and ask nicely whether he can teach you this spell list vs some years of service... That's the way magic apprenticeship often works. Not very exiting for a PC but a possibility nonetheless. :(

What do you think about the charm + suggestion combination?
You have all valid thoughts but I would like to focus on spell use.

I don't think it's a good idea. It surely will work: if the mage fails his RRs he will believe that you're a friend of him and will begin teaching the list to you. But charm has a duration, and when the spell end the mage will realize that he's been cheated. Suggestion compel him to teach the list to you, but doesn't prevent him to fry you with a ligthning bolt you you tick him off...
I suppose a magician might, he admitted, but a gentleman never could.

I would use Cash. Great motivator.
Failing that, I would stay way and truly away from threats/violence.

"Yes, the lightning bolt spell always ends with your thumbs pointing inwards, but you cant cast it just yet, you need a level or two more. Practice at home. Bye bye"

In SUC there is an arcane list - Devious ways. The level 8 spell - Influence would do what you need, but if you can get that list you probably dont have that many problems with normal lists...

There was a Rolemaster spell somewhere that allowed you to steal knowledge of someone, can't remember what spell list it was from, might have been RMC VII and one of those changing lists or something. Easier to steal the knowledge than to learn it.
That one was a really moral dilemma on my sage at the time ... is that amoral or is it okay ....

Minde Lore True, Bard base list, a high level spell (level 30) but caster can scan a mind and retrieve all knowledge consciouss and subconciouss on a very specific topic. Lower level spells it is a percentage chance per bit of knowledge.

So how specific is the topic "Everything this magician knows about Fire Spells?"
