Comparing character levels between D&D 3.5 and RMC
« on: January 02, 2008, 04:27:26 AM »
The premise of this thread is a bit skewed, but I am trying to understand RMC with the eyes of an outsider and to see how easy (or not) it would be to scavenge D&D adventures to adapt to RMC.

So how would you say that D&D (3rd edition) levels compare to RM levels?

I have the impression that a Level 1 RM character is much weaker than a D&D character (especially spell-casters).

What would compare - in overall might - to a D&D level 10 character? RMC level 15? Level 20?

Hum... I guess it's no exact science here, but would appreciate comments and opinions.

I think the standard rule is that RMC levels are x1.5 of what D&D levels are, so a lvl 10 in D&D equals to a lvl 15 in RMC.

I think violence in games only causes violence in real life if the person in question has an insufficient mental capacity to deal with the real world in the first place. But, that's more the fault of poor genetics and poorer parenting than it is the fault of a videogame

If you are going to try and convert D&D adventures, then bear in mind that the dynamics of combat make a major difference, particularly at higher levels.

Where D&D parties can easily cleave their way through low level hordes, RM players will find that any battle that leaves them heavily outnumbered a major struggle.

Also, creatures such as dragons and the bigger giants are much more powerful due to the Super Large critical tables.

Finally, remember to warn your players that RM combat is MUCH more likely to get them killed, and so it is often better to avoid combat.

Bear these in mind and the 1.5x rule works pretty well.

The crit-kill vs block-of-HP issue is discussed for HARP conversions:

Equally applicable to RM. . . .having a single Giant Toad pull a total party kill on five 1-3rd level PCs is essentially almost statisticly impossible in D20, but a real danger in HARP or RM.

Playing with nastier monsters, a discussion of Giants here:
