Ptolus, need some advice?
« on: September 07, 2007, 05:47:10 AM »
Hello,

I am going to be running a Ptolus Campaign with HARP and was wondering if anyone had any advice about how to convert over some of the races to HARP.

My first question is that Grailwarden Dwarves loose their special bonuses versus orcs, goblinoids, or giants. Instead, they gain a +2 racial bonus to Profession (engineer), Craft (machines), Knowledge (machines), and Craft (alchemy) skill checks (d20 rules).

Would the +2 equal a +5 or +10 in HARP?  And would I modify their racial information instead of their culture or vice versa.  Need some advice please.

+2 = +10 in the conversion
As for the rest, I can't help you as I don't have access to the Ptolus material.
I can say this...

Racial abilities should be tied to the genetic physical traits
Culture should be based upon learning and environment

Racial gives "talents" while culture gives "skills"

Thanks that does help alot, I was thinking the same thing when I was trying to convert the races but I always welcome a second opinion.

Here is a link to a free copy of the Player's Guide to Ptolus.

It is also located at other PDF stores on the web.

Yes, I forgot I had that. I've never read it...
I'll jump to the pages on races and send you a PM on how I would convert it.
For copyright reasons I won't post it  - but if you like it you can post your comments and share it with any who request it.

Hi,

I played in Ptolus and I didn't even try to convert the rules. I took the HARP races as they are and the rest I decided case by case (for example OB/DB of ratmen).

Well most of the races are easy to convert, but the Level adjustment on a few races is giving me problems.  I understand the reasoning for some of these, but making them work with HARP in a balanced way is tricky.  Would you mind to share (Private Message) your notes?

Thanks for everyones help, the only two races that I need to re-create for HARP will be the Litorians and the Harrow Elves.

For more information on Litorians - http://www.lby3.com/dnd/index.php/Litorian
