Gems Essence rating.
« on: March 29, 2011, 10:14:37 PM »
My friends I've been running a Rolemaster campaign for a long time now and one of my players always asks of me what is the essence rating of a gem. In this particular case he is playing a CrystalMage and wants to use 9-Crystal Matrix II.

Can any one give me a idea where to look at this info ?

Best regards
Eric MM

Essence Companion, chapter on crystalist spell casting.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

Thanks, the strangest thing is that RM comp 3 mentions on gems essence rating and the Essence comp was published a lot of time afterwards.

Look at the Essence Companion, around page 25.

No, on second thought, you'll need the old RoCo III. Page 66.
9-Crystal Matrix II- Caster can store 2x the crystal's essence rating in PP; excess PP will crack it.
Not sure yet how much PP that was back in the day.  :)

Its always annoyed me the way it was done in the Essence Companion.  On the one hand, Treasure Companion had a very simple system that was applied to Alchemy:  The value of a gem is its essence potential (since technically, Lord Research is done by releasing a gem's essence in crafting, the same is transfered over to alchemical base cost).  Not only is the linear relation between essence potential and gem value is lost in Essence Companion, but suddenly gems have a different value altogether.  I could live with the different essence potential as relate to crystalist casting, but 2 Companions with different value of gems = FAIL.

RoCo III was written in 1988.
EssCo is 1997.

I'm surprised that they are so similar.  :)
So it's value that measures PP potential.. good to know.
But yeah, the GM has to choose which version fits the game world.

I guess I'll go for Carat value based on gold = essence rating

Diamond colorless  = 15g per carat = 15 essence points for 1cm diameter Diamond , the base for Wt. of 1 cm diameter is 14carat a Diamond would cost 15X14 = 210 gold.

what do you guys think ?
