Question about the Races of Kulthea.

Last night I was browsing the Master Atlas in bed before going to sleep.

Something that has been bothering me are the generic races vs. the specific races. Who uses them? Are they for GMs who don't wanna bother with all the specific races or are they for characters of mixed bloodlines(where it's hard to classify a pure race) and based on the milieu where they grew up?

Anyone have any insight on this would be much helpful.

I don't use it either normally, but sometimes someone gets a Northmen or Mixed Men but is very very rare and personally i don't see the point. It's more usual when someone get one of the Half-Elves in RMC1 ( Types A, B, etc) . It's the only exception.

I have always assumed the generic races are ancient bloodlines mostly lost in my SW game.  I have thought about assuming they are the orig of the other racial variations amongst humans, but never went that far.

I assume they are there for completeness sake.  As with any races, a GM can pick and choose.  I have always wanted to run a campaign were elves have just been rendered extinct by a magically produced bio weapon.

I disdain elves.

I don't use the RM generic races in Shadow World.

There's already so many races just in the Master Atlas ( with enough game information to use them ) that using RM generic races is just superfluous...

We use the SW races for abilities and stats, but they tend to still be called the old races from RM.  Also, most of the software packages that handle character generation didn't have the SW races so we had to put them in.

Just to clarify things.
I was talking about the Generic Races from the Master Atlas not the ones from RM2/Classic books.

Just for the record : There's 52 races in SWMA3 and SWMA4 while there's up to 170 playable races in the previous editions of the SWMA and all the books.
( that include, Bladestorm and Gethaenna, but not Kabis )

Just for the record : There's 52 races in SWMA3 and SWMA4 while there's up to 170 playable races in the previous editions of the SWMA and all the books.
( that include, Bladestorm and Gethaenna, but not Kabis )


Yes they do, atleast in SWMA4 on page 65 at the end of the Humanoid Races chart and apppering again on the Mortals Race Chart for RM2 and RMFRP on pages 68 and 70.

After the Men: Specific Races are listed there are six Men: Generic Races listed.

  • Common Men
  • High Men
  • Dark Men
  • Northmen
  • Arctic Men
  • Mixed Men

And as you said there are loads of races even in the earlier editions, and that was why I asked.
Are these supposed cover the rest of the races not listed or just for the lazy GM's or Player's who don't wanna bother with reading about the Specific Races.

So far I have only assumed the latter and have forbidden my players to take them.
