RMX Spellcasting time
« on: November 14, 2008, 08:15:46 PM »
Does anyone else think the preparation time is a little harsh on spellcasters?
One of my PC spell users wants to participate in combat but most of the time his spells come too late or come less effective...

Suggestions?
Comments?

Have you tried the alternate casting times as suggested in Express Additions #10?

OK, just finished reading EA10.
That helps in my playtest game, because it includes spell lists beyond 10, but what about my other group that is just using RMX where the lists stop at 10?

I have been trying to come up with some alternatives, but I am not confident in any solution :-\

Thanks!

Use the same rules. It doesn't matter what level the lists stop at. That option is geared for the power level of the spell, not the max level the list goes to.

Plus, you can always add Spell Law to the mix to allow them to get spell's above 10th level. The whole idea behind stopping the spell lists at 10th level was not to limit what level they can cast to, but to save space, and encourage them to purchase Spell Law to get the higher level spells.  ;D

Since these players are D&D'ers, I wonder if just letting them cast one spell a round...no prep time... is a good idea?

I can't really see a problem with this since they are limited by only being able to cast spells on a list up to their level.

Would this unbalance the game too bad?

Thanks!

Only by 6 levels or so...
It will very much so give the magic users an edge over the non's.
I guess the only downside will be no-one will want to play an arms user, you can pretty much count on everyone playing semis or pures.

I would just use the option from EA 10. This is RM, not D&D. Even using that option would be a bit of a compensation.  You could easily allow 1 round casting for the level 6-10 spells at a -10 to the casting roll.

But, the decision is yours.

Rasyr, your advice is more sound than my thinking :D

I shall use EA10 procedure along with the -10 to levels 6-10 for 1 round casting you mentioned above.

Thanks yet again! ;D
