Survival skill?
« on: October 22, 2008, 10:30:52 AM »
Our Ranger is missing the survival skill. How would you solve this?
1. Add Survival skill to the game
2. Work with the existing skills
- Fauna lore
- Herb lore
- Flora Lore
- Weather watching
- Wood Crafts
- Leather Crafts
- Foraging
- Ropemastery
- Did I miss anyone?

I wouldn't bother, just use Foraging.   I see Survival as finding/locating food, determining good places for shelter, starting fires....Foraging seems to be the best match.

The Ranger isn't going to like to have to go back and find DP's for the skill and rightly so - the plethora of overlapping skills makes it all too common for players to miss many of them during development.

Use Foraging, along with "Region Lore" (i.e. Lore: General (region xx).

The Lore provides the knowledge, the  Foraging skill itself provides the act of find food, water, and with a tiny stretch, even shelter.

The other skills you list could also be useful in certain situations.

You may differ Foraging into sub-skills for one-sided use:
Foraging (general)
         Foraging (fishing)
         Foraging (hunting)
         Foraging (vegetables)

But mostly Foraging (general) will do.

But what if the PC travel to a different climate code ?
Would Foraging be less effective ?
