I have used a Dark Elf race somewhat based on the dark elves in Raymond Feist's
Riftwar books. Can't remember what they were called, but they were very power-hungry. Unlike most elves, they lived a disciplined life. I took that and combined it with a romanticized version of feudal Japan and came out with.... well,
something.
Anyway I liked it, and a few of my players have taken them for test drives.
In my last campaign, they became entangled in some inter-clan intrigue in a dark elf society as they blundered their way through the greater story line. They took those polite, well-dressed elves too lightly, and ended up losing one of their party. He died alone and almost-naked in the wilderness, wearing nothing but a woman's silk kimono that was way too small for him. It's a long story.
