Title: Official: What's happening with HARP next?
Post by: NicholasHMCaldwell on January 03, 2011, 11:04:31 AM
Happy New Year to all HARP fans.

The immediate priority for GCP with HARP is to release HARP SF and follow this with HARP SF Xtreme.

At the same time, we need to rebrand the existing HARP Fantasy products and get them back on sale in pdf and print. As HARP SF has introduced a number of improvements to the HARP system, we are going to take the opportunity to retrofit those fixes into the main HARP Fantasy book (so Flat DPs per level as the standard, Skill Flexibility as a human special ability, recosting of Talents for better balance, etc.) None of these changes will be massive, but since we have to open the book so to speak for rebranding, we ought to make them now

HARP Fantasy will take first priority and we will then proceed through the other key books and get them back on sale in both pdf and print-on-demand in the first instance.

There will be new books for HARP in due course but more on that later.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

Will it be possible to get hardcover versions of any of these books? or just pdf and softcovers? when these books are re-released?

From the sounds of it I believe, once available, you should be able to get a pretty good variety of book types.  From PDF, to various quality paper and hard backs.  Obviously, to a degree, you'll get what you pay for (i.e. the better quality format the more longevity the book will likely have).

Any chance that you folks might throw some of these changes out to us for Beta testing?
Paizo (Pathfinder) does this, and it seems to help a lot, as far as getting rid of bugs...

Glad to see that HARP is gearing up for an infusion of new energy.

I was just wondering about the release of "Something Wicked", any updates?

I am not involved with this but ...

The last I read (GC Nov 2010) is below - I assume it is caught up in the need to get all the base products back out in print.  I would expect it would arrive sometime after that.

Ongoing Work on Something Wicked

The first editing pass on Something Wicked has already been completed. My editor had some vacation time that he needed to use up, so he spent that time reading the entirety of the manuscript. I've already completed about half of the editing requests for correction and clarification, and will be pursuing the rest as time permits over this month.

Still no news? Has Something Wicked ceased to exist or is there an IP issue with it?

Something Wicked is simply contingent upon the updates we need to do on all of the other HARP books.  Once that is completed and we have HARP back for sale, then Something Wicked will follow in line.  Nicholas can give more of the details, but from what I have seen it is definitely going to be a great product.

I am so excited about the continuation of HARP! I still have not found a system I like better.  ;D

I understand that the new monster creation system is under construction, but do you have any hints on what the new one may look like?

I've been working on porting some monsters over to Harp, and creating new ones for my Harp SF game - and I've been less than happy with the creation system in MaFG.  The order in which things happen just don't "click" in my mind and I just have a hard time putting my finger on what is bothering me about it.

So I am excited about the prospects of a new Monster generation system.

Where might we find this, if it is available for our perusal?

Is it too late to get in on the discounted ($5, IIRC) HARP pdf?

No, it's not too late. Once HARP Fantasy is rereleased, we will make the discount coupon available.

Hello, new guy here. Forgive me for asking the eternal question: is a release date more or less set?

Allow me to explain the particular reasoning behind that rather trite question. I happen to get quite a few books from my beloved mother-in-law, who likes to visit the FLGS every so often because people there are so nice. So I make it a point to help support the hobby by asking her for a RPG book on every birthday or Christmas. Now, as it turns out, my birthday is mid-August.

The question then becomes: should I ask her for the new HARP Fantasy book, or wait until Christmas and ask for something else this summer? Either way satisfies me, as long as I get to get my hands on the new HARP Fantasy book at some point. I'm just asking for strategic pointers.

Thanks in advance, and have fun designing our next book!

My Mother & Law wouldn't be able to find a games shop lol. I would also like to know when the game is landing, I am looking at some house rules for my next campaign (playing some HARP Sci-Fi at the mo) and would like to see the revised edition before I start tinkering

Thanks

Whoohoooo!

Now I just need to find the money to buy it and finish up my fantasy setting in a hurry.  I may have to bite the bullet and cut it into two separate sections to make it reasonable to finish in a timely manner.

Will you be releasing physical copies for FLGS?

If there's sufficient demand that we and our printing partners can justify a print run, then yes. There would be a probable six month lag between the go decision and print copies actually turning up in stores, though, - print runs take time, have to be shipped to distributors, etc.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

To be honest I think if there is a print run at all for FLGS's, that print run should be in hard covers. To be sure, that may reflect my own prejudice in favor of hard covers over soft covers. Nonetheless, soft cover editions can be had through PoD, so to some extent you'd be competing against yourselves, and in addition there are those few like myself who would rather buy the hard cover at the higher price than the soft cover at the cheaper one. Having a hard cover edition at the FLGS gives customers a reason to buy there: The product they really want flatly isn't available by any other means.

Whether there's sufficient demand, I can't even guess. Yes, I'd love for you to do a print run just so I can get exactly what I want... but if I'm the only one, well... I'd love to have one, but I'm not gonna buy a thousand or so just to keep them from being remaindered.

OneBookShelf/LightningSource does hardcovers and softcovers with equal aplomb these days. Both HARP SF and HARP SF Xtreme are available in both hardcover and softcover. The Shadow World Player's Guide is only in softcover for page count reasons - it's too small to make a good hardcover. (We could do a hardcover even at its page count but it would look silly as the binding would dwarf the innards).

Best wishes,
Nicholas
