Seven Wonders of the (Shadow) World
« on: April 15, 2010, 07:53:33 AM »
I was watching a documentary about the seven wonders of the world, and it got me to thinking.  If you were trying to describe Shadow World to someone, what seven places or things would you suggest they see?

My top picks are the Needle in Thuul, the lighthouses of Izar, the Royal Tombs of Haalkitaine, and Upper Sel-Kai city.

Eidolon, for sure.

Votania (Spelling?) where the Masters of Emer Lived.

The jungle that the Kuluku live in - forgot its name.

I am sure there are others, but I just can't think of anymore right now.

Royal Tombs of Haalkitaine maybe, but the Tombs or Ur more likely IMHO. However, as it goes with wonders of the world, the Tombs of Ur are lost in the wasteland.

I would also say The Library of Nomikos most definitely. Great building and VERY important place in the world knowledgewise.

Edit: Sorry, did not read that close enough. Are we talking about places I would recommend to someone or places a Kulthean would recommend to people to visit. I would agree on the jungle but as a Kulthean I wouldn't mention that as it is not a place built by mankind.

Interesting question! Maybe there could be the seven 'natural' wonders (like the pillar of the gods) and the seven 'constructed' wonders, like Eidolon. And would the artificial ones include places that most people would never see? (like Karilon and Nexus).

Just tossing that out.

Good thought, I think that was something that also moved around my mind. Difficult to do with Shadow World as it definitely has some places that you would want to see but the normal hero would never have the possibility to. Arenthrok might also be one of them. For place that most people will never see I would also add Andraax Tomb (with all its rooms and wonders) as well as the Forges of Arion, Gryphon College, Nexus and Karilon, the Tombs of Ur were already mentioned.

For places that might be possible to visit I would like to add Namar-Tol which must be amazing.

I think artificial wonders would only include ones that people have visited or heard of. Some places might be impressive, but if no-one knows about them, even through legends, they're not exactly wonders.

As long as we are throwing out wonders of the world most people could never visit, how about the subway shuttle network under Emer?

just a peanut gallery comment. . .how about 3 sets. . .natural, made, and hidden (Thus, you can come up with the 7 best hidden vs the 7 known "man" made ones.)

What about the distinction of "built my man" and "built by gods"?

There are loads of places on SW when the place is simple not possible to recreate using modern SW technology. I sort of doubt that these would be viewed as wonders. Most citizens would probably consider them to be the act of the gods.

Categories would perhaps be natural wonder, man-built wonder and god-built wonder if you ask a SW inhabitant that does not know about the finer points of the history.

On the other hand the original question of this thread is not necessary from the view of an inhabitant, but could equally apply to somebody that want recruite players to their SW gaming group.

Hi, All,

Well, it's not complete- but I've broken it down into Natural and Constructed, and further broken it down into Known and Secret.

So, here's my tuppence worth on the 'Wonders of Kulthea':

Known Natural Wonders:

Lour'ka'tai (Pillar of the Gods)
Ixyia
Spiral of Marek
The Essænce Flows & Flow Storms
'Floating' Islands
Balloon Pods

'Secret' Natural Wonders:

Ash Lairs
Ice Grottoes
Gethæna (If that module is considered canon.)
Tower of Yarthraak (Included here because it's grown, rather than built.)
Coral Roads (ditto)

Known Constructed Wonders:

Eidolon
Kaldaraak-Vaar (Dawnwater's Edge- might fit in the secret section?)
Lon Lemira & Yenor Staideyes
Lighthouses of Izar
Nomikos

'Secret' Constructed Wonders:

City of the Dead
Just about any Dwarven City
Acropolis of the Titans
Sub-Shuttle System
Tarania
Any K'ta'viir installation
Karilon
(The trouble is the list of Secret Wonders could go on and on.....!)

Any other ideas/suggestions?

It would be interesting to hear Terry's take in the Wonders of Kulthea.

All the Best,

Kevin.

You could possibly include most/all of the Eight Secrets in the list of constructed secret wonders.

I'm surprised at the amount of locations that I don't recognise - but I am a relative Shadow World n00b. I wonder if it's possible for people to reference what books more details on each location can be found in.

...pretty please? :)

Really, Yenor is cool, but not sure he would qualify (and Vog Mur is pretty remote and unknown). There's a place in Xa-ar...

It's really tough to say, since even I have not thought in great detail beyond certain areas in the Shadow World. It's not like people in Emer know about some huge ocean-floating city far to the east.

But this discussion is fun, just to see what you guys find the most interesting places. :-)

Oh,   Rapata! (That town in Xa-Ar with the model of the solar system.)  That definitely qualifies.
