Author Topic: Shadow World Char Gen Spreadsheet Problem - Help? (Read 4913 times)

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem and could help. I am using Jonathan Dale's excellent and comprehensive excel spreadsheet for the SW campaign I'm just (re)starting, and I get an error for the power point and body development entries whenever the file calculates these. The problem only seems to arise for the Kulthean races below Nomari (Dwarves). Anyone got any ideas. And by the way sorry if this post seems inane.

Hey Darksilver

Does it give you a specific error? Or just declare an unexplained error and fail. I have used this spread sheet before and didn't have that problem. Are you using Excel or Open office?

Easiest possible solution(s): Are you able to try this on another computer? Have you tried to download the file again to see if it works differently - properly?

Don't worry about open office. Open office does not like poor Jonathan very much. I won't be able to investigate till tomorrow as my machine is linux. At work I am on XP.

I am using Office 2007 with Vista Home, and the problem relates to PP development and body development. Somewhere in the chain of reference the file fails to locate these racial values, returning a #N/A result, even though if I evaluate the formula it does seem to locate the race name. Is there anywhere where it is necessary to state that there are more races in the race table, because as I stated the problem specifically occurs with races on the chart below Nomari? (However even those races correctly return their stat and RR mods)

Update: Just re-downloaded and tried on machine running XP - same problem occurs.

I was actually talking to my wife last night. She said that I never used the spread sheet because it was broken as well, and to lazy to fix it.

She knows me to well.

I was able to reproduce the problem - So lets see if we can't fix this... this time around.

From the looks of it, the link for some of the races, as Darksilver stated, Body dev and Power Dev are making calls to blank cells.

I unlocked the sheet and copied some code into place from a race that worked. So that may be the quick and dirty of it.

Correct me if I am wrong ob1knorrb, but those look to be a different series of the Jonathan creation, did you updated the races yourself?

I took the races from about three different versions of Shadow World adaptions of Jonathan Dales sheet, merged them and validated the values, so it is probably different than whatever one is in the vault.
It's been a long time since I worked on that, so my memory of exactly what I did is a little fuzzy.
I also see that the link to the PDF at ICE no longer works, I'll have to find that in the vault and update my page to have the right link.

Are you up to updating the PDF or do you need to? If so I am up to helping out and I have a player thats up to it as well.

It does look like Jonathan did a hell of a lot of work, so if Don can fix this, does that solve all problems, and save you time?

(elrik thinks this should become a PHP project... more and more and more)

No plans on updating the PDF itself, it was a project for ICE that was completed. I have updated the link so it points to the correct page in the Vault where the PDF can be found.
I also did another project of converting the stats for "Cloudlords of Tanara" to RMFRP which never actually got published. I'll have to add in links to the spreadsheets for those NPC's as well.

I did some digging around and I think this one is more like the standard spreadsheet without all my weird additions but with all the Shadow World races added and the corrections made, but since I'm trying to remember back to Feb 2004 when I last worked on it, I could be mistaken. If it does work okay then I'll upload it to the Vault. Which reminds me, I think I have a Spacemaster sheet that needs uploading as well...

There was a "name" which wasn't referencing all of a chart, just the top third or half (so when you selected an option from th eunreferenced portion of the chart, the lookup function returned a "Value Not Available" error).
I've adjusted the definition of the name and the sheet seems to work fine now.

Where should I send this?

I used the links provided and downloaded the files on Thursday (the 2nd) but didn't have time to look at them until this morning (the 4th).

So I have two files:
Dale[1].RM-SWCharGen.xls
Rolemaster_Complete.xls

Both now seem to work fine (it is possible one OK before I looked at it but at least one had the problem detailed above).
NOTE: I haven't tested all of their functionality (which is a good amount) but the problem originally mentioned is corrected.

Firstly, I must say how pleased I am to see such a rapid and well-informed set of responses to my post. It's truly heartening to see how vibrant the RM community is in the face of such (IMO) flavourless juvenile nonsense from the industry leader (naming no names). Secondly, to DonMoody, would it be possible to get a copy of your fixed spreadsheets? I'm in the process of finalising a party for this week's game and your files would be invaluable. I'm also in the process of replacing all the generic languages in the Communications category with SW ones. Could you tell me if there are any specific pitfalls to be avoided, particularly as the number of rows will differ from the original.

Dammit, another issue discovered. How I curse my inadequate understanding of the workings of spreadsheets. On the 'fixed' versions of the file that exist on ob1knorrb's site the hide unused skills macro doesn't work properly. The same is true for the NPC files (or at least those that I have opened).
