Shadow World Book on E-Bay
« on: July 15, 2008, 01:09:50 AM »
I just put in "Shadow World" on E-Bay looking for some modules and prices and spotted "Shadow World: The Eidolon Chronicles" by Jane Johnson

Terry - has Jane gotten permission from you to use your ideas?  Then again, from reading the synopsis (Twelve-year-old Ben Arnold returns to the magical world of Eidolon to rescue his sister Ellie and help their mother battle the vile Dodman, whose power continues to grow.), she might have only cribbed some of your most basic concepts and descriptions.  And this is the second book in the series...  Maybe she gave you credit in the acknowledgements.

Reading some descriptions of the series, it looks like the only similarity is name similarity, rather than concepts.

I was wrong.  It's actually the 4th! book in the series that she started in 2005.  This is long after Shadow World was created.

Maybe someone should buy a copy and give a review of what was inspired (plagerized) besides the names.

Her website (and wikipedia) says she's an editor of children's books.  Which, as an editor, means she should know better.

I let Bruce know... we'll see what happens. Maybe she thought the name was cool and assumed that SW was 'dead.'

I see she worked on the Lord of the Rings Visual Companions too.  Interesting.

Well if anyone gets a copy, I'd be interested to know if there are any more parallels inside. Like does the magical city of Eidolon fly? Where is it located? Any characters we know turn up??

I should think that proof of your trademark, a 'Cease and Desist' from your attorney, and some blathering about Intellectual Property rights would take the wind out of her sails quite effectively.  (The nerve of some people.)

If that doesn't work, you can always sue her for all profits deriving from the use of your ideas.  (I must have been a lawyer in a previous life.)

Or they can offer a chunk of cash to buy Shadow World or allow a % of profits to go to whoever owns the copyright.

As a fan I agree but sometimes stuff happens. Also just for the record again I am a volenteer so I know nothing besides what is on the website of if a special anouncement is made.
