Forgotten Realms arrived in my hometown before Greyhawk and I know that Greyhawk was out years before. I live in northern Ontario, and at the time it was expensive to get games up here. By the time Forgotten Realms appeared, my buddies and I had left D&D behind.
We jumped in Spacemaster, then I got Shadow World boxed set, and realized I didn't have all the right rules. Had to buy the rule books and that took me years as I had to wait for visits south, or family members willing to venture into the 'creepy' gaming/comic/hobby stores down south.
Now that I sit here and think, a group of us would spend some time with Merry Jane and read the damage tables to each other. Giggling and sputtering like idiots... those where good times.
I have 8 boxes full of Gaming books and I always come back to Rolemaster and Shadow World.
