Phasing/merging Venturer spells
« on: September 09, 2020, 02:41:43 AM »
Hello,
The text of the "Body" spell list says:

Quote
7) Phasing Caster may move through solid, non
magical material at a rate of l' per round. The
caster is not able to cast spells while moving, and is
unable to see where he is going using just this spell.
9) Merging—Caster can merge into a solid, in
animate material (up to body depth + caster is
inactive unaware of surrounding activity; caster
cannot cast spells.

What is the actual difference between these two spells? Merging allows merging with animated material such as a person?

Note that the Merging text says "IN ANIMATE" (see image attachment), which I do not know if it is a mistake and it really means INANIMATE, as indicated in other Merging spells from other lists.

I would hope that it's a typo and should be 'inanimate' and if the word was to be hyphenated as it appears at the end of a line near the page margin it should say "in-animate."

If discretion is the better valor and
cowardice the better part of judgment,
let's all be heroes and run away!

And what if someone is bleeding and casts phasing or merging? He stops bleeding momentarily? or for example if he has suffered a mortal wound in which he dies in 6 rounds?

Like Spectre771, I assume Merging is supposed to say "Caster can merge into a solid, inanimate material."

The differences between the spells are:
* Phasing cannot be used to enter magical materials, Merging can
* Phasing permits movement, Merging does not
* The duration of Merging is ten times longer

So phasing lets you pass through, while merging lets you remain concealed.

Since the spell doesn't say anything about bleeding or other physical conditions, I would assume they continue to affect you. Your phased blood continues to leave your phased veins.

Which book is Venturer in? This is exactly the kind of spell I was just looking for.
We ask the hard questions here, because they keep us too busy to worry about the hard questions in the real world, and we can go with the answers we like the best.

I believe it’s from Combat Companion

I think violence in games only causes violence in real life if the person in question has an insufficient mental capacity to deal with the real world in the first place. But, that's more the fault of poor genetics and poorer parenting than it is the fault of a videogame
