Title: Is it my imagination or was there a SM 2nd ed compendium book?
Post by: danskmacabre on February 18, 2013, 06:18:53 AM
The same rules as 2nd ed (which were separate books) but in one book.
I'd like to buy that instead of the separate books (unless my imagination is playing tricks on me )

Is this possible?

Not your imagination - I have a physical copy. I've not found any viable scans of it.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

I don't believe that Aurigas/ICE has any physical copies in its inventory of old stock.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

No, stockpiles of SM are limited to a few of the SM:P titles.

I remember when I ran SM 2nd ed many years ago.
Great system.
I originally bought the boxed set when it first came out and it was a hit with my players.
Very handy that I could hand out the separate books to everyone.
But the compendium book was good as well. I used to stick that in my bag to read and have everything in one place.

Sadly, I lost my SM stuff in one of my many house moves over the years.  :(
I think I had pretty much everything ICE released for it.   Great times..
I remember rolling that 00 on a shrapnel "A" crit and the look of horror on the player's face when his character's head got blown off.  :D

Ok, lets see ( It's going to be easy, I have everything SM/SM2 not far ).

SM 1st Edition contained Tech Law and Future Law ( in a boxed set, but you could have them as stand alone books too )
Spacemaster Companion ( unnumbered ) was for that edition.

Then came SM2, the content of the above companion was included in the rules, and all the vehicular design and combat from the Tech Law and the SMCu was removed and put in other products ( Namely : Star Strike for Space Combat and Armored Assault for Air/Land/Sea combat ).
That Spacemaster 2nd Edition originally came in a boxed set that contained the Player Book, the GM book and the Tech Book.
To this was added the Spacemaster Companion I.

Then a bit later was released a Second Printing ( well what I call a second printing ) of SM2 as a single book ( #9050 ).
This book only contains the Tech Book, the GM Book and the Player Book under a single cover.

Yeah that's the one I want. I'd love to get that physical book again one day, sadly lost now..

And SpaMCo 2 - don't forget SpaMCo 2!

I actually own two copies of the boxed set - one through purchase and the other because I'm 'minding' as friend's SM and RM stock until he has space - and that's been like 15 years now :)

My gaming club are generally a rules light/high cinematic crowd, and I was a bit worried when I introduced a campaign based on SM2 - but they quickly found that once the initial learning curve was overcome (smoothed by Excel), the system offers so much flexibility and scope - and of course the always entertaining critical tables - that they quickly became hooked. I think the turning point was when in a difficult fight, one of the tech characters got lucky on his laser rifle attack, scored a decent crit and a decent roll (those things never go in tandem) and burned the face off the rifle-armed sniper in the back of the enemy group.

SpaceMaster 1st Edition had a single SpaceMaster Companion.
SpaceMaster 2nd Edition had both SpaceMaster Companion I and SpaceMaster Companion II.

Well, if ICE are short of cash, they could always "find" some copies and stick 'em on Amazon for a snip at $250 or so :)
