New Casting Style
« on: June 03, 2010, 06:25:51 AM »
Hi All,

an idea that I have been toying with for a while (and pushed BEYOND reason by my fellow players!  :o )

Casting Style: Dance
- uses full body motions in the style of dance in order to manipulate the power matrix to cast spells.
Must have at least as many ranks in Dance as in a spell he wishes to cast.
i.e. a Bard With Dance Style wishes to cast Charm person. She pumps up the spell to 20 ranks. To do this she must have at least 20 ranks in Dance. Luckily she has 22, so she is able to dance for 4 rounds and cast the spell.

Effectively this follows the same rules as a Bard with Song, but uses the skill Dance instead.

Pushing beyond the envelope:
Casting Style: Dance Style (Mime).
A bard uses mime to cast spells... OMG!

Your ideas?
Would this work?
(Got the idea from the RM companion Dervish...)

Great stuff! This is ace, whoop!  8)

Off the top of my head I can’t seem to remember how casting styles worked, but I like the general idea of doing the macarena to charm someone. heheh. or tap-dancing a fireball in someone’s general direction. yes.

It seems fine Jason.
Good work!
I always like seeing new casting styles.

Would love to see the look on the dragons face when the wizard starts to dance around its lair casting a 30 level spell!! Hilarious.

Or the evil necromancer breaking into the funky-chicken as he casts his soul-blaster spell on the PCs.

Not a bad idea.  For a little flavor, read Castaneda's stuff.  In one of these books, there's a Yaqi sorcerer -- Sacateca, I think his name is -- who uses dance as a part of his sorcery.  After all, in that tradition (according to Castaneda, or those bona fide ethnologists whose work he plagiarized), these "styles" are merely means of accessing the "other-reality", the "units of meaning" that comprise the sorcerer's world.  I think you'll find the bit on Sacateca in the second book.

And why not?
What do you mean, you didn't buy the Perception skill?

Has anybody try it with a combat maneuver or MA maneuver ? For example, if you consider the Order of the Volcano from the Codex, you can use their MA style has a casting style requiring a roll on the bonus column and capping the scaling of the spell by the number of ranks in the style.
Maybe it will give to much advantage to a single skill, the MA Style allowing better attacks and spell casting ability ?
Now there's a plan : we go there, we blast him, we come back...

rather like the Dervish and/or Houri from RMC
Of two equivalent theories or explanations, all other things being equal, the simplest one is to be preferred.
