What is the AoE for Shadow Mentalist?

The spell states that the double image of the caster must stay in the AoE. The Spell says "Varies".

Perhaps the spell description should have been phrased "the duplicate is limited to moving within the range of the spell" (100' btw.) instead of movement within the Area of Effect (AoE). IMO that would make more sense. Another indicator for this is the Shadow Mentalist II spell at lvl. 20 which has "-" as AoE. That makes little sense with the current wording of the Shadow Mentalist spell description.

For that level of spell, I think anywhere within 100 ft radius would work.
