Has anyone considered that the passage from JRR might be a spell or temporary effect?

Well anything is possible but if it was something they had to explicitly invoke, why was it active? They were not under threat or pursuing some urgent need or anything like that. Hence I am assuming it was not an effect they had to 'activate'.
