Races with Gifts
« on: January 30, 2009, 10:25:51 AM »
Hi to All Folks!
In HARP the races are built with Talents. This idea is very good. I just want the same for RMC. Inspired by HARP and the texts from Character Law and CT, I wrote a very little informations for the major races of RMC.
 Dwarves (45)
- Dark Vision (10)
- Dense Musculature (20)
- Skill Flexibility ?Caving/ Craft miner? (5)
- Skill Specialization ?any one metal/stone craft? (10)
- Stone Sense (15)
Elves (65)
- Elemental Resistance ?Cold? (15)
- Elemental Resistance ?Heat? (15)
- Enhanced Senses (15)
- Quiet Stride (30)
- Night Vision (20)
Gnomes (25)
- Dark Vision (10)
- Skill Flexibility ?Lore Obscure? (5)
- Skill Flexibility ?Lore Magical? (5)
- Skill Flexibility ?Lore Technical? (5)
Goblins/ Hobgoblin (30)
- Dark Vision (10)
- Skill Flexibility ?Caving? (5)
- Skill Flexibility ?Craft miner? (5)
- Skill Specialization ?Caving? (10)
Half-elves (30)
- Skill Flexibility (5)
- Skill Flexibility (5)
- Night Vision (20)
Humans (20) + 20 free DP
- Skill Flexibility (5)
- Skill Flexibility (5)
- Skill Specialization (10)
Halfling (60)
- Elemental Resistance ?cold? (15)
- Elemental Resistance ?Heat? (15)
- Quiet Stride (30)
Orcs (35)
- Accelerated Mending (5)
- Dark Vision (10)
- Dense Musculature (20)
- Skill Flexibility ?craft smithing or weapon/armour smithing? (5)
- Skill Specialization ?craft smithing or weapon/armour smithing? (10)
 Trolls (80)
- Dark Vision (10)
- Elemental Resistance ?Cold? (25)
- Elemental Resistance ?Heat? (25)
- Tough Hide (20)

My intention isn't to make balanced races: I've just read the texts (the elves are a very powerful race...). The costs included some eventual add of the base Gifts.
Obviously it's up each master to consider the race; it's just my vision!

heh.. I had been contemplating doing the same, but roughly balancing the races in doing so for an EA article (mostly because we do DO this for the RMC Cyradon material that is in production).

Balancing some mechanics is typical to modern rpg...
I' am a hardcore loving old school rpg with some unbalancing ideas, like old AD&D1 ;D

Some of your math is off. Elves have a total of 95 when adding the costs of the Gifts, not 65; and Dwarves have 60 points worth of Gifts, not 45.

The problem with unbalanced races is that folks will tend to gravitate to the more powerful ones.

For example, yammahoper has a brother who refuses to play anything but an elf. Back when I was working on HARP, he (yamma's brother) even got very upset with me because of what he saw as me "nerfing" the HARP Elves because I wanted the races to be balanced. I wanted folks to choose a race on flavor not on power levels.

And that is how I will likely always view things.  ;D

You're right: big typos ;D....A real Mental Fumble...F-minus to maths
I've just forgotten to recalculate after some mods...sorry

I just did it because in the texts about races there are some informations without rules:
- ex: elves are naturally resistant to cold/heat, elves are almost invisible in natural surroundings...

For the problem of unbalanced races:
- don't forget the Racial Level Offset option!
- even if some races are powerful (the Tolkien's elves!) some players (like me...) aren't power mongers and play races for roleplaying/fun and not for the mere power

Sure, but you always have to try to leave the GM the tools where a power monger player can't wreck his game.

Star players off with a set amount of DPs that they can buy both their races, talents, & packages with.....100, then worry about levels after that....therefore a more powerful race would start with less points in Talents & skills.

There are a number of other games that do this but the one that comes to my mind is Shadowrun if you are looking for some rules to guide you if you want to take that route.

Yah.  I run HERO as well as HARP & RM.  They use a set amount of points and you spend them on everything.
