Title: Copyright Question
Post by: arakish on May 24, 2014, 09:17:38 PM
What is the Copyright date for the current ICE logo (see attachment)?

I want to attribute the correct date for a project I am working on.

That is a damn fine logo - I don't know why the forum still has the old style in the header.  ???

I've always like the old style logo for ICE. Also from a marketing standpoint it is easily recognizable by the those that once played RM back in the day.

I'm with Ironmaul.  Call me old fashioned, but I like the old one better.

Old doesn't always mean outdated  ;)

Yeah... the original crown was apparently Morgoth's Iron Crown, with the three Silmaril set in it. At least that's how I always understood it.
I've long wondered if the refined crown symbol that is now missing the Silmaril was meant to reflect ICE having survived the loss of the Middle Earth license?  :)

The old one does not possess the same artistic quality, but it is a point of connection for many who look at their original Rolemaster books as some of the most prized treasures - that being said, we could not return 100% to that as it would appear we were living strictly off the past and we're not.  The new logo pays tribute to the concept of the Iron Crown, but does so with new flair.   We keep both on the site as a tribute to the past and a proclamation of the future.

As for MERP - we don't turn our back on MERP, we praise it as a wonderful system and in a great setting... but due to licensing we can't use either the system or setting right now, so while we encourage use of the old MERP material we cannot commercially use it in any way.

Note - when you are on the forums on the main page you will see that the forum sections with no new posts use the old logo (old log = old posts) and those with new post use the new logo (new logo = new posts).   Just reinforcing the same ideas.

Ah - that makes sense.

Whoa - I've seen the different logos used there but hadn't made that connection! ??? I must be getting old!  :o

Thanks.  New question: What is the copyright date on the original crown graphic?  I may also incorporate it.

I believe the first ICE product came out in 1980, but I don't have the month - not that the month really matters.
As for the inquiry in general, I am not an expert, but I believe the proper reference is the Trademark date as I don't believe you can copyright a logo.

The years provided were the 1st years that the trademarked logo was used in an official capacity.
