Which version of the Paladin do you like best?
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:33:15 AM »
Choices are:

EA 17:  RMSS to RMC conversion of the Paladin
Combat Companion:  Divine Champion
RoCoI (new edition):  Paladin

Which version of the profession do you like best and why?

I had to choose #3 as I haven't read the other ones.

I don't like Paladins at all, really.
To me and IMHO, they are simply Fighters with some Channeling spell ability.

A military solution isn't the only answer, just one of the better ones.

I like the RMSS version, but would actually prefer to see them with a variable folio as presented in the EA that revised the Ranger.

Can't say I like any of the three choices. But I haven't seen the new RMCI. I preferred the original paladin in the first RMCI but with the combat level bonus dropped to a +1

RMC1 (new) is essentially the same, with a few typos fixed, and the MERP materials removed.

No option for the RoCoI Paladin with the additional RoCoII lists?
The world was then consumed by darkness, and mankind was devoured alive and cast into hell, led by a jubilant 紗羽. She rejoiced in being able to continue serving the gods, thus perpetuating her travels across worlds to destroy them. She looked at her doll and, remembering their promises, told her: "You see, my dear, we succeeded! We've become legends! We've become villains! We've become witches!" She then laughed with a joyful, childlike laughter, just as she kept doing for all of eternity.

I preferr the one in RoCo I and I have read them all. Next in line is the RMSS version which i pretty neat as well. The one in RoCoII which Olf asks about is slightly out of controll imo but I do use it when the paladin in question is an athurian one i.e. honest and noble in spirit and body, pure in thought and soul. As I have no religions what so ever in my world that would function with members of such dispositions RoCo II paladins are always characters who exist outside the established religious systems. The Divine champion is functional as well but only a paladin in case the player chooses to act like one.

I was wondering how armor works for the new version of the Paladin in EA 17. I can't really imagine a Paladin wearing anything other than metal armor... is that still possible with the EA 17 version?

Just wondering.

Hmm...I see your point, but metal armor interferes with channeling magic.  Still, if you wear a hat, nobody will see your point.   :Joker2:

I do not have the EA 17, but of the different Paladins around that I know of, I prefer the RMC I/II version.

I tend to prefer flexibility and it seems to be the Paladin from the companion I + II allows you to customize your Knight in Shining armor better, but will also admit the lists from Comp II provides the Paladin with a serious power boost.

I guess the image of the Paladin in Plate is something that carries over from D&D for it is my image of him as well. Unless you allow Champion lists to be chosen in addition to the EA#17 lists then the paladin will be stuck in Leather.

I think violence in games only causes violence in real life if the person in question has an insufficient mental capacity to deal with the real world in the first place. But, that's more the fault of poor genetics and poorer parenting than it is the fault of a videogame

I just can't see a Paladin in leather... just doesn't feel right to me.

Then use the rule from RoCo I that deals with channeling and metal armor. It basically says that they could be allowed to do so and if you do you should reduce their cost for maneuvering in armor. I use it and find that it is a fine ruling.

I actually allow the RMCI paladin in my game but they are stuck in leather armor AND they only get a +1 per level combat bonus (with a corresponding increase in social skill and athletic skill bonus).

Perhaps the paladin can only wear armour which a cleric has prepared using clerical rituals dedicating it to the correct deity. So in that one suit of armour the paladin can cast normally but only in that suit.

In my Karnorthe game I use the Paladin per RoC I and II but only for the god Tilanor, god of law and ruler of the gods.

I also do not allow/have every gawd with paladins.  For some, a nightblade is far more likely, just as an example.

Still, the RMCI was great.  It was the addition of all those other/new base list that unbalanced the paladin.  Great thing about FRP's Channeling Companion, the list are better designed and balanced and allow a GM to design a Dark Champion or a Paladin.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

I am tempted to use the Chanelling Companion in my basically RM2 game.
