"Creative"names
« on: May 12, 2010, 06:37:39 PM »
All right, I get that Maleskari probably really is a male (that is) scary as he is a demon lord but to be honest naming a god Shaun da Cool (Shaundakul) is just plain ridiculous.

Are more of those out there?

Try pronouncing it "mall-scar-e".
That's how I do.
Or maybe "mall-es-care-i"
I smell what your cooking though!

I always thought "bugbear" was... stupid.
And RQ had ducks as a PC race... like Howard the Duck. I thought that was ridiculous.

Let me stew for a few days and I'll see what else I come up with...

"Bugbear" is just the equivalent of "bogeyman". It is a related word, with bug- (probably related to bog- or bogey) being a Celtic term for evil spirit. And apparently, it used to be described as bear-like, back when it was a serious folklore monster. Why D&D degraded them to yet-another-rung-on-the-humanoids-to-kill-in-large-numbers dullness they gave them is as much a mystery as how awesome mine spirits that actually have an element named after them wound up degraded to the lowest rung on the aforementioned metaphorical ladder.

I was not really talking about how you pronounce stuff, I pronounce that one somewhat like "malis-karee" ... cannot find those phonetic symbols at the moment.

My thought were more on where those name came from, how the creators got those names.

The most famous example is probably the Mad Archmage, Xagyg Ygrane.  (It's an anagram of Gary Gygax)

Also from the Greyhawk campaign, the villain called the "egg of coot" was a caricature of the game store owner where the campaign was played.  (He was a historical battles gamer and hated RPG's.)

Composite Bow= Composite Bow as said by a late friend. And yes it is almost as good today around the gaming table as it was when he said it.

I've always had a weakness for "punny" names.

The healer named Mel Practice.

The guy whose cyberware was all free, won as an out of court settlement for the industrial accident that made it necessary... Bill Murphy.

The beautiful psycho killer, Mercedes Darling... her friends, such as they are, call her Mercie of course.

The abysmally stupid Dwarf Fighter, Dain Brammidge.

I do not know if it is creative but after seeing some names in movies and life I liked these two, President George W Bush, with the W standing for Washington. Two Presidents in one name so he or she has to be a great person. The other was a rename from a movie Cathouse Thursday, named so because his mother had the baby at the Cathouse on Thursday, with the Cathouse being a animal husbandry center for big felines and not the other Cat House.

Sounds like something in my game. An old, old recipe, handed down among the members of the Flyce family. They call it "Flyce Water."

If you decide to drink it whatever you do don't change your mind and spit it back out... cos it'll dissolve your facial hair.

It's right up there with Imperium Compound for "Make Your Will Before Drinking" type of things.
