My Bashkar uses TWC Broadsword/Longsword and BattleAxe and thrown weapons.

Fighter is Broadsword and composite bow.

Does no one use slings?

Only one PC and one or two of my NPCs.  One was a burglar who used it more as a "distract the guard with a noise" rather than a weapon.

I've played a gnoll once. RMSS Races & Coltures - Underground Races contains a racial TP spell list for them, which adds some nice spells for the sling stones. That was fun. Other than that I had a dwarf paladin that used the sling as secondary weapon. That was okay because the sling allows for usage with a shield, which makes up a bit for the slightly worse attack table of the sling, compared to e.g. a composite bow.
