ERA won't start on macOS 10.15.2
« on: January 20, 2020, 08:45:57 AM »
Hi,

My friends and I are going to start a new RM campaign and we figured we should give ERA a try.  However, when I download the demo and try to run it on my Mac, I get the following error:

The application “ERA-RMFRP.app” can’t be opened.

I assume this has something to do with the 10.15 restriction on 32-but apps.  Is there any chance ERA will ever be updated to fix this?

Thanks,
Mike

Same here - I suspect you are right and there will need to be a Mac-specific rebuild when the gods of code have time.

Hi, thanks for bringing it up.
ERA has been built as a 32 bit application so far to accommodate for as many users as possible, since I know for a fact that people have run it on Windows XP and Raspbian.
But, seeing that Apple has now forbade us from working in 32 bit, we will have to shipping both 32 and 64 versions of ERA depending on the OS.

It may take some weeks till that is made available.

In the meantime:
- Don't update
- Use a Virtual Machine with an OS that supports 32 bit applications
- Use someone else's computer for ERA with a compatible OS

Sorry I don't have any better suggestions.

Anyone using MacOS updated to the latest version (codename Catalina I'm told), please try this version of ERA and let me know if it works for you.

Thanks!

No it doesn't.
I have bought all Era extensions last year. It worked perfectly on MacOS 10.14

2 weeks ago I was about to relaunch a RM campaign with it, but in the meantime I upgraded my Mac to  10.15 and discovered that Era isn't a 64bits app :-(.
Thanks for working on a 64bits version. Tell us if we can help.

Please note that a new version has been uploaded.
It has instructions on how to allow ERA to start in Mac Catalina 10.15.

Let us know if there are any issues with this new version.
Thanks!

I'm trying to run ERA for Mac.  I've tried the latest versions (both the one listed in this thread and the latest one available on DriveThruRPG).  They both fail with the message "“ERA.app” is damaged and can’t be opened".  Note that this is not a 64-bit issue (the ERA-Server is listed as "Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64", and I get the failure on both 10.15.7 and 10.13.6).

When I try to verify the program's Gatekeeper status, it complains "ERA.app: invalid Info.plist (plist or signature have been modified)".

Has anybody else seen something similar?  Is there a workaround?

Have you already tried the steps mentioned in the Installation Instructions? Just in case they are pasted below:

In macOS (for macOS Sierra 10.12 and higher): Extract the files in the downloaded ERA-Mac zip file.
Execute the application "ERA-RMC.app" or "ERA-RMFRP.app" depending on your ruleset. Installed books, characters and adventures are stored separately for each of the rulesets.

In macOS 10.15 Catalina and higher, you might need to open a terminal and execute the following command to allow ERA as a registered application:
sudo xattr -d com.apple.quarantine [LOCATION OF ERA.app]
sudo xattr -d com.apple.quarantine [LOCATION OF ERA-RMC.app]
sudo xattr -d com.apple.quarantine [LOCATION OF ERA-RMFRP.app]
For example:
sudo xattr -d com.apple.quarantine Downloads/ERA-Mac/ERA.app
sudo xattr -d com.apple.quarantine Downloads/ERA-Mac/ERA-RMC.app
sudo xattr -d com.apple.quarantine Downloads/ERA-Mac/ERA-RMFRP.app
