Elves and aging
« on: October 02, 2015, 09:31:54 AM »
Rules clarification, please.  The description of the Elf race says that Elves do not age or grow old.  However, on page 161 of Gamemaster Law, there are rules for the effects of aging on Elves.

Which rule is correct?

Can you give a page number and book for the non-aging reference?
Thanks

In RMSS it's on page 213 of the core book, section Cultures & Races, in the general description about elves.

One page 161 of GM law it has a special note concerning aging and elves and orcs, did you take that into account (in the intro)?
It basically says that the soul ages in the immortal races and you should treat the rule of aging (as presented in GM Law) as applying to them.

Does that answer your question(s)?

Then the race description in the main rulebook is incorrect.  Elves DO age and grow old.  This solves the " 10,000 year old elf" problem quite nicely.

Thank you!

Just my general observation for discussion:I think it is rather specific in that the immortal races of elves and orcs do get "world weary" but do not age as humans do.

It also brings up a moral/philosophical question that may not apply to your RPG or even you, what should happen if a person feels like they should be allowed to pass on?

I do not think that I would say that the book is wrong.  An elf is immortal and does not age, according to the core rules.  Yet according to the GM Law rules, the SOUL ages.  The body and the soul are two totally different things.  As was mentioned the soul grows weary of the world and wishes to remove itself from the world, or wills itself to die, or sail off into the sunset as the elves of Middle-Earth did.
