Floor plan design software
« on: September 26, 2015, 02:05:23 PM »
Many years ago I had a program that allowed me to design rooms and entire floors and print off floor plans and even 3d rendered views.

Does anyone use anything like that now that they can recommend? I want to plan out projects as small as taverns but as large as manor houses.

Well, you can find this kind of thing in Costco for real world design, but you might want to take a look at the Campaign Cartographer software.  They might have something that fits the bill.

Ah, here's what I was thinking.  It's part of a broader set of software.

Cool thanks for the pointer. I was going to resort to sketchup if needs be.

That looks a bit cartoon-ish for what I had in mind but thank you.

If you want to drain your bank account you can do what I've done... Hand drawn grid paper floor plans in a folder + Dwarven Forge products.  That's an expensive road to go down though.

Www.rpgartkits.com + an image editor that lets you work with layers and png files, allowing you to drag and drop images, creating your own maps.

Today I am going to try and complete the FreeCAD Architecture tutorial and see how I get on. It claims I can create 2d floor plans and 3rd models that can be rendered using povray. It also supports importing stock 3d objects.

I have the artistic talents of a slug so we will see how this works out. I don'the hold out much hope.

The Campaign Cartographer product line is fairly simple to use...you can avoid "cartoonish" by setting the effects the way you want them ;)

There's also Dundjinni - I think I have an example in the Shadow World vault - but all official support seems to have vanished judging by posts in the forum.

Last I knew, Dundjinni really needed to be updated for a newer version of Java, but there was no money to do it. That said, the Dundjinni forums are a great place to get .png resources if you want to make maps in some other program.

Yes, there are a lot of good images regularly posted. The problem is that the license to use them isn't always clear. Not really a problem for personal use; a rather more major one for commercial.

If anyone is interested, the freeCAD tutorial works completely the wrong way around for what I wanted. They start by importing a floor plan and then use that to generate 3D designs.

I think the easiest option for me is just to copy and paste stuff around in a photo editor, squared paper background and transparent selections.
