G'day!
I hope you don't mind me asking Terry, but is there interest in an annotated checklist of Shadow World products beyond the barebones listings I've seen of ICE products?
I'm thinking of something that can be used as the first post of a stickied thread here, so that peeps can come in and see at a glance what there is, what there has been, who wrote what, and maybe even a paragraph or two of comment straight from the Terry's mouth.

Hi, so basically, you are looking for a list of canon SW materials? sure I can start one, though unfortunately many are currently out of print. I am working as fast as I can to get them back into publication, but it's taking awhile...
-
Terry,
I was thinking more of starting one myself, rather than imposing on you to do the work, and updating it as needed. You, however, would be more than welcome to add annotations, the paragraph or two (as noted above), and correcting any mistakes.
Do you mind if I start work on the checklist?

Here is a start:
Master Atlas V. 1-4(boxed sets and bound)
The Grand Campaign
Jaiman
Jaiman: Land of Twilight
Haalkitaine
Xa’ar
Cloudlords(loremaster series)
Cloudlords Revised
Iron Wind(loremaster series)
Emer
Emer Master Atlas & Addendum(boxed set)
Emer II: North East
Emer I: North West
Eidolon: City in the Sky
Mini Adventures
Island of Jade
White Woods..?
...(I know there is more by Terry)
-
Should the Player's Guide be included?
-
Of course, Voriig!
*****
I hope to get a start on it after I've made my lunch (it's almost quarter past midday right now, here).

Thank you for the update, Terry, I appreciate it.
My pleasure. Of course, there are some other modules in that list that are a bit 'out there' which I would not include in my own version of the world, but I don't object to. I suppose if you want to get technical, only the stuff I actually wrote would be considered 'canon' but I have included Quellbourne, and parts of Star Crown in my timeline, and I've included Norek in Jaiman. But books like Magic Isle, Nomads, and Desert Jewel are all kind of take-or-leave. I may have mentioned them peripherally, but if I ever get out to Thuul, things might change.
Back in the old days of ICE (pre 1992), the financial powers wanted to push out as many modules as possible, and other forces wanted SW to be a kind of 'plug-and-play' generic world, which of course I resisted. Hence, we got Underearth Emer, Island of the Oracle and (shudder) Orgillion Horror (which was originally a rejected Call of Cthulhu module!), and many of the others mentioned above. Some better quality than others, whether or not they would fit into the Shadow World as I saw it.
Others, Like Quellbourne and the Tales of the Loremasters, were written embracing the SW background more or less. Sky Giants I was ambivalent about, but now I'm writing a module set in that area, and that is going to kind of rewrite it, so, as they say on Voyager, prepare for temporal incursion...
I don't know if that clarifies things or just muddies the waters more...
-
It clarifies things for me, since your central vision suffuses the setting, and since I consider Kulthea very much a creator-driven setting.
-
Before I forget: Terry, you're more than welcome to add annotations to the checklist, such as a paragraph or two on items.

You might also want to check out this website http://www.icewebring.com/articles-and-indexes/reviews/rolemaster-fantasy-roleplaying/ (http://www.icewebring.com/articles-and-indexes/reviews/rolemaster-fantasy-roleplaying/) as Brent Knorr has done a lot of stuff like this already.

Right you are Mark, here's a direct link to his SW page, where he has blurbs about all the products up through Player Guide. (oops we left 'Powers' out of our list!)

Ooh! Any problems if I go over the checklist & add links to Mr Knorr's individual pages, as well as links to the relevant RPGNow pages?

Looking good, but if you don't mind adding my notations about non-canon, and you can add it to those first three novels. ;-)
-
Will do, Terry
-
And, not to be too commercial, but, in addition to the webring notation, a link to where someone could actually buy the book would actually be useful? While Brent's page is a nice informational reference, if people want to purchase the materials, a direct pointer is nice.
Several of the main SW sourcebooks are still available through RPG now. Xa-ar in particular would benefit from a current link, and also the new Cloudlords.
Sorry, but you wanted to do it ;-)
-
I'll provide the links & notations this afternoon, no worries. :)

Wow, that was quick, actually, nice work! And to be honest, there are some books that are available in PDF that I was not aware of, like Getheanna, so you can take the asterisk off any that are still available by PDF on RPPG now.
And feel free to link the White Woods, Grand Campaign, anything that is free; and I did a little thing with the Sel Kai towers as well, all free PDF downloads. Nice work, we should pin this (which I can do once it's all set), and ask the Forum gods to put in the archives. Again, nice work, and a good resource! Please proceed. And for me, back to that fire in Sel-kai...
-
Seriously wondering where I find the 'Little thing on Sel Kai Towers'.

I think it was U-Lyshak Towers (http://www.eidolonstudio.com/Shadow_World/Links_files/U-Lyshak_towers.pdf).
Incidentally, there was some stuff on the old Eidolon site, mostly magic items and the City of the Dead, I think all from Ask Andraax, that I can't find on the new site.

Thank you, Terry! :)

That is amazing! You're dedication is commendable.
I just remembered two more items you could add:
- The kulthean martial arts and weapon styles document
- The small supplement that included attack tables for Shadow World weapons

Thank you for letting me know about them, Voriig; where might I find copies?

Seriously wondering where I find the 'Little thing on Sel Kai Towers'.
I think it was U-Lyshak Towers (http://www.eidolonstudio.com/Shadow_World/Links_files/U-Lyshak_towers.pdf).
Incidentally, there was some stuff on the old Eidolon site, mostly magic items and the City of the Dead, I think all from Ask Andraax, that I can't find on the new site.
Yes, exactly right; don't know where I got Sel-kai; just woke up from a nap I think. As for that magic item stuff, I'll have to go through my old files, I have the old site stored somewhere.

Great progress, though it seems like you have several links (like emer map version 2) that all point to the Grand Campaign link....
-
I shall return to the checklist tomorrow evening. Tonight, I have a concordance to work on, and files to shuffle.

Certainly no rush; this is turning into quite a project. But if I could add a wishlist, maybe we could put them closer to chronological order (I can help if necessary, but maybe at least move the old ICE modules up and the newer ones/new editions down) and I could even rate them by my personal preference, because we are now getting into 'canon' (my stuff and a handful of others),'non-canon but, it doesn't bother me personally' and that other category... (put them apart 8) )
-
Terry,
IMHO I think that if you can rate them it will only be a good thing for the fans.

I'll dig into my archives, I have lists of books with SW stuff in them from the old Rolemaster FR mailing list tucked somewhere as I was the one in charge of sending them regularly. ( along with all the pesky lists of RM/SM/MERP/ and related products from ICE usable in RPG )
-
I'm a little late to the conversation, but I had a list of SW canon materials along with some notes if they are of any use.

Thanks Matt, this is a helpful update! These notes could certainly be integrated in with the listing with my blessing.
-
Phillip and Terry,
Can you copy the list somewhere (this thread or another) and pin the current one as the first post? (Or if you've done this, point me pls.)
-
When I get the time & energy tonight, I'll be making an updated, revised list so will add it here and ask one of the forum wizards about keeping a revised list in the first post. I know I've been AWOL, but life, as usual, had intervened....

Still partway through the list (I got distracted by a programme on the telly about Yagan).

Hey there, thank you for this great list. I am delving deeper into the world setting and these files definitely help me get my bearings.
-
How is the work on the list progressing? Anything new about it?
-
Hi everyone,
[Sorry for my English, I am no native :'(]
I came looking for such a list and I find this! Awesome!
I am a RM player/user for more than 20 years, mostly with the Middle-Earth materials. It just happened that I already read all the old ICE modules, and I was considering moving into a new campaign setting... that is, SW –which BTW I knew but never actually used; in Spain just one book was published. Given that the SW materials are growing in number, I am completely lost, with no guide to distinguish among "First books", "Guide books", "Completely necessary books", etc. I have searched in the forum but not found what I want. Somebody (i.e. Terry or whoever) please could at least give me some hints about the following questions?
1) Is there some plans of reprinting the out-of-print items? Of course I will buy the PDFs in RPGNow, but it is not the same... I would find nice if RPGNow gives us the possibility of get every book printed ::)
2) I plan to buy everything (sadly the EUR - USD rate is changing :'(), but it should be made in the proper order, i.e. in the order I should read the books. I assume it is not the chronological order (Vog Mur, Tanara, etc.) but the internal order (First Age, Second Age...). Or maybe buying first the general books (Atlas? Emer?) would be more appropriate? Are those books divided according to geography? Periods? I think the SW Guide gives no clues for these questions.
3) I wonder if one could get ALL the SW Books together, in a set.
Thank you guys, best,
Josué

I would say that you first need a Master Atlas - either SWMA3 or SWMA4. There are differences; I know some people prefer 3. Powers of Light and Darkness is then a useful GM addition. The Player Guide provides background for players.
Next, you should decide on an adventuring locale. The primary areas are Jaiman and Emer. Currently, there is more published for Jaiman, as three Emer books are being overhauled.
For Jaiman, the two current main area books are Cloudlords of Tanara and Xa-ar and Northern Saralis. Quellbourne is a popular, old non-TKA supplement in Jaiman, although it's only available as a PDF. Guild Companions 2 and 3 each have an adventure set in Xa-ar. Wulris is another area that is currently in progress in Jaiman, and Tales from the Green Gryphon Inn will soon(ish) be out, and is also on the continent (I think).
For Emer, there currently is really only Emer III and an adventure in Guild Adventurer 1. Emer I and II are being overhauled, as is Eidolon, and the adventure in Guild Adventurer 1 is set in the locale of Emer II.
The Loremaster Legacy, despite being a fiction work, also provides quite a lot of background detail.
-
Dear Lord, this can't be more useful! Thank you very much.
I looked in RPGNow but it seems that the Master Atlas are only available in PDF. Is that true? Really? If they are so important - and helpful - I think a print version is needed.
A list of published works is great, but such a bibliographical guide is more important for the non-specialists. Maybe a chronological guide does already exist?
Thanks a lot,
Josue
-
JJJ,
Welcome the ICE Forums and do not worry about your English it is fine. ;D
I would like to provide you with some basic info on ICE republishing for the old products. The old products have to be recovered or scanned from either paper book or old files and both may have serious issues with formatting and grammar. So it can take a lot of work to get the product to a point where it is available for print. At times there is also a problem of finding the author and receiving his or her permission to reprint the product. And unfortunately the last point is that is some cases the product just does not make monetary sense to do all of the above.
I can say that ICE appreciates your enthusiasm for Shadow World and they will work to try and get all of the older material into e-form and paper format that they can.
I hope that helps in some small way.

Hi Mark,
Thanks, it helps. Of course I understand the problems it brings, I meant no offense. I just wrote "what we the fans want", not "what is viable". Sorry if I expressed otherwise.
In the case of the Master Atlas, the are ready-to-print versions, Terry is always there, working in new material, and I guess the books sold very well (at least every fan would buy them). I hope I can get one of the print versions in the near future; thank you very much.
Off topic: I came from the MERP world. Of course, everyone knows that ICE discontinued the line in 2000, so apart from the fans work, no official material can be published - at least with the RM system, The One Ring is doing well. But in the case of Shadow World, which attracts me so much is that the line is pretty alive, with Terry via Facebook giving good news every month or so, and working hard on new books, new adventures, etc. Good work guys!
-
Terry expects to complete the manuscript of the updated Eidolon next, although Tales from the Gryphon Inn should be next out.
We are deliberately not putting either 3rd or 4th Edition back into print as the intent is to release a system-independent GM Guide and then system-specific Handbooks.
Best wishes,
Nicholas
-
Thanks Nicholas. I guess it is a good idea the way you describes it - yet it means that I should start with other books, not the ShWMA. In any case... shut up and take my money!
Best,
Josué

I would suggest that a Master Atlas would still be important - it could be quite some time before the replacements to it are released, as there are at least seven in progress Shadow World books that I know of that could well be released prior to them.
-
You might be able to find old copies of Master Atlas 3rd & 4th edition on Ebay or Amazon, though shipping might be an issue.
-
Oh and glad to hear of another new excited SW fan!
Just for general information, Emer I and II and Haalkitaine (centered on the capital of Rhakhaan in Jaiman) have all been converted from old PageMaker files to InDesign and laid out again. All three have already had major additions and edits done to them, so they are underway. Eidolon (set in NE Emer, but very close to Jaiman), as Nicholas mentioned, is nearly complete. There is also a revision of Norek, a city-state in Jaiman, underway.
There is a Jaiman sourcebook, published way back at the beginning of Shadow World, that is a bit of a conundrum. It should be an overview of the continent, but ended up being half adventures with lots of elaborate 'dungeons' (for lack of a better word). Really, it should be completely overhauled and include the tons of new information from the later regional modules.
So, lots going on.
-
Thanks for the info, Terry!
Whenever I had difficulties following the ShW line, I write a post asking for the fans' help ;)
-
I would suggest the 3rd edition Master Atlas over the 4th edition Master Atlas. It is more complete. I would go with Powers of Light & Darkness followed by Jaiman Land of Twilight then the Xa-ar book & Haalkitaine. But I prefer Jaiman over Emer.
Honestly though you can't go wrong with the titles written by Terry Amthor.
The Emer route would be Master Atlas 4th edition, the Powers of Light & Darkness, the Emer Boxed set & any of the following Emer I, Emer II, Emer III, or Eidolon.
There are more adventures/dungeons in the Jaiman books other than that the difference is more personal preferance.
here are more recommendations by me & others:
http://www.ironcrown.com/ICEforums/index.php?topic=15750.0
-
I always use my 3rd ed atlas as a reference, but the 4th does have some additional material in NW Emer (which is now folded into the new edition of Emer I). I was not a fan of the Atlas 4th layout design though. :-\
Some of the titles Kyussopeth mentions are not currently available except through Amazon or Ebay, or similar used book vendors. Emer Boxed Set is rather dated but it does have the funky Atlas Addendum.
I actually have a couple of extra Jaimans I think, though not sure if they have the maps still intact...
-
The 4th edition certainly used up a lot of ink when I printed it out.

Yeah they tried to copy the D&D style of the time with the huge borders on the outside. I never saw the point of repeating the same elaborate thing over and over. Sure the current SW style is kind of plain, but that was (IMHO) too much, and took up space.

The current Shadow World books are, however, some of the nicest supplements I have bought recently from an art point of view. Most of the others only have colour covers at most, with black and white art for the rest of the book.

Yeah they tried to copy the D&D style of the time with the huge borders on the outside. I never saw the point of repeating the same elaborate thing over and over. Sure the current SW style is kind of plain, but that was (IMHO) too much, and took up space.
Thanks! I think they have nice illos, and I try to really make good use of the full-color for the layouts. PoD has really changed the print book landscape, and with printers in Europe and the US, shipping his (hopefully) not too much of a burden.

Hi again.
Last week I could visit my local store, you know, in Spain (I prefer, if possible, to buy in local stores; it's a way to help maintaining this kind of stores). I have found so far four ShW books in the Spanish versions:
1) Libro de Reglas (2004) = Master Atlas 4th ed. Printed!
2) Atlas de Emer I. Haestra y la historia del imperio emeriano (2005) = Emer I, I guess.
3) Poderes de la luz y tinieblas (?, this one I have not at hand now, I have left it in the bureau) = Powers of Light and Darkness.
4) There is another book which I have get, but the copy has no cover and I am not able to identify the original source. It was published, with no doubrt, before 1998. Let me translate (my own translation) the main chapters, so you maybe can say which English book come from:
I. Kulthea. II. Arcane power. III. Vegetal world. IV. Creatures. V. ??? (Kaeden, Sentinels, Gogor, Shards, etc.). VI. Demons of Arcane Power. VII. Demons of the Void. VIII. Mortal races. IX. Immortal races. X. Gods. XI. The good and the evil, the order and chaos. XII. About the civilization. XIII. Great Powers. XIV. Jaiman. XV. Emer. XVI. Folenn. XVII. Travelling Kulthea. XIX. Other Worlds. XX. Apendices.
[BTW, the prologue starts with a cite of Andraax, from the Nomikos Library in Jaiman]
Is it maybe the Master Atlas I or II? Any Spanish fan who knows of others printed books in Spanish?
I have not already started reading the books, I plan to start the next week; and of course I am ordering the English books you recommended some days ago.
Best,
Josué

I have that one!
The cover reads: El Mundo de las Sombras - Atlas General (un mundo de fantasía medieval para Rolemaster)
I am quite sure this is a translation of the Master Atlas 2nd Edition.

Thank you! Could you please indicate the ISBN and year of publication?
ISBN 84-7831-156-4
Printed in March, 1996
Made by JOC Internacional
Based on the second edition from 1992
Something else I remembered: a friend had the original English version, and it had more information than the Spanish one. Most of the creature descriptions in the Spanish version just tell you to go look at C&T for the details, and only present the tables with numeric values. The English version contained all the details for every creature.

I also just picked up the 2nd edition MA. It does have more info on the continent of Folenn. Though this is not important for the Jaiman and Emer adventurers, it adds some more flesh to the world as a whole. Don't know why the info got dropped with 3rd and 4th.

Maybe it was moved to Bladestorm? SWMA2 is one of the few books I lack.

Mr. Amthor can please correct me if I am mistaken, but if memory serves, in between the publishings of Master Atlas Second Edition and Master Atlas Third Edition, it was decided that Folenn would be further fleshed out by S. Coleman Charlton, the designer of Bladestorm. Bladestorm was a skirmish-style miniatures game set in Folenn, the Bladelands. Unfortunately for Folenn fans, it would never come to pass and Folenn is only mentioned in passing for Atlas 3 and 4.
Now, one would think that since the plans for Bladestorm have fallen through, that Folenn could make a triumphant return to Mr. Amthor's realm of canon (hint hint, nudge nudge, wink wink).
On a side note, Bladestorm does contain a sourcebook which details a region of Folenn. If you can find a copy, it is worth it.
Thanks,

You can still get Bladestorm on Metal Express. It may turn up on RPGNow at some point (I'm not sure).

You could be correct (though the idea of Coleman doing cultural background material seems a bit odd) I do remember that Atlas2 concentrated on just Jaiman, Emer and Folenn, mainly because that was all we had done any background on so far. Atlas3 came much later, and by then I had some idea about what I wanted for the rest of the hemisphere, and there had been modules located in other locations as well.
Folenn has always been Pete's continent, and with so much else to work with, I'd be reluctant to add anything to what is already published anytime soon. Oddly enough though, there are ties to Folenn in the Xa-ar module!

Maybe I can help with a little comparison between the works.
Shadow World Master Atlas 2nd Edition:
Pages 170-171 Part XVI: FOLENN: LAND OF HUES
The two pages cover the discovery of a jewel road to Folenn by Kalen, Jad and a Navigator. I found this pretty cool because I am currently reading "Loremaster Legacy" and didn't expect such a scene to materialize in the introduction to Folenn.
Pages 172-175: 1. History (Bladestorms, The Pyto Travail, The Gale of Hues), 2. Lands (Hidden Colonies, Immigrant Domains, Lost Immigrants, Old Beasts), 3. Other Powers (Steel Rain, The Soulslayers, The Duskwalkers, Guardians of the Gale, The Breathless, The Jewel Knights)
Bladestorm Sourcebook:
Pages 3-4 Part 1: Folenn (Six extra lines of introduction. The following text is identical [Chroniclers call ...]: The History of Folenn, Bladestorms, The Pyto Travail, Bladestorms Info Box [Maybe a typo, text is identical to MA2 "Gale of Hues"-chapter], Folenn Now)
In general MA2 Pages 173-175 "Other Powers" match BSSRC Pages 7-8 "Greater Powers".
Then come the differences:
1. Page 5 BSSRC Principal Factions introduces the "Denizens of the Ash Lairs"; not covered by MA2.
2. Page 173 MA2 The Steel Rain introduces "A Watching Sister: Moura"; not covered by BSSRC.
3. Page 174 MA2 The Soulslayers introduces a serving race "Vancu"; not covered by BSSRC.
4. Page 6 BSSRC Info Box "Getting to Folenn" matches parts and pieces from MA2 Part XVII: TRAVEL ACROSS KULTHEA, Pages 176-180.
Similarities stop there. The Bladestorm Sourcebook then starts to explain races and factions of the Warring Holds that make up the principal combatants for the Bladestorm skirmish game. Material shared by both books is roughly 4-5 pages.

And I was overjoyed to find all the Bladestorm stuff available in PDF format from RPGnow. including the Unit calculators. It makes fleshing out the Realmworks copy of Shadow World (wow I work slow) so much easier.
YAY no more Transcribing paragraphs from the print copy(s) I have!
Let the [ctrl]+c>[ctrl]+v fest begin!
Eric "Soulcleave" Gibbons
...and then I have to create all the ERA RMSS/FRP stats for all of the combatants...
...and work up rules for Bladestorms...
...and continue to Pray for Arcane Companion to be adapted to ERA...
...and pray for RMU files for ERA...
...and pray for Fire and Ice files for ERA...
...mebee I should stop rambling now, I seem to be going off topic.
-
Oh, that sounds nice. I am intrigued by your project. Are you using the Combatant/Unit Calculator together with Realm Works?
Tooling has not yet been decided for campaigns. If Realmworks is capable of organizing combatants/units/heroes/vehicles with png/pdf-based cards and point costs that would be a real treat.

I hate to say it, Mr. Amthor, but there really needs to be a Master Atlas 5th (Ultimate?) Edition that compiles all the info from the previous editions and possibly some new stuff. I know that probably won't happen until RMU is finalized, but it needs to happen. Please put it on the list.
Thanks,

I agree, and higher powers have said that indeed, it will wait for RMU.

This is very useful information for me running long term SW campaigns...I now understand a little more where I shouldn't delve to deeply in SW with the players. However, I decided on north Thuul already for the start setting of one of them...

OK, so with Eidolon out, Emer I and II revisions in progress, plus work on Wuliris in progress, I'm wondering what the status of Haalkitaine is? It would be nice to have a PDF version of this available, especially if a revision is going to be a couple more years out in the future (as the other projects seem to have gotten higher priority).

Actually I was just thinking about Haalkitaine the other day. I has been reformatted, and I hadn't planned to do too much to it besides new adventures and new illustrations, so it would be relatively quick to do.

Cool, thanks for the update; it's one of few sourcebooks which I have only in hard copy, so it makes it slower to reference during play and is really key when players are running around Rhakhaan.

And we French were lucky that this was the only shadow world book ever translated and published in France (by Hexagonal) ...

Any chance we are getting a hard bound Vog Mur? It was my first ICE module, which was given to me along with the original Rolemaster books back in the mid 80s.

Vog Mur is too small to do hardbound. The best would be saddle-stitch, and it would have to be completely redone and updated. Much of it appears in Emer II, which will have a new edition hopefully later in 2018.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I was thinking the original Loremaster books might all be getting a similar treatment to Cloudlords.

I believe the original Iron Wind is available as PDF; I doubt it will be updated any time soon for multiple reasons. Shade of the Sinking Plain will not be revisited in any form, because of license and compatibility issues. Vog Mur was originally written by Pete Fenlon and Kurt Fischer as a D&D module proposal in the 70's; it is also available as a scanned PDF, and I think will only be updated/adapted as in Emer II. Those are the four original pre-Shadow World 'Loremaster' books.
Best Wishes,
Terry

Well Cloudlords is pretty awesome in and of itself. I didn't even know about 'Shade,' I thought there were only three. I have the other three in their original release form, and the Iron Wind PDF, plus the hardbound cloudlords. I'm going to have to hunt down Shade of the Sinking Plain on Ebay now. ;D
Thanks for the detailed response.

Don't bother re Shade. I don't consider it 'canon,' and it's not really set even in the Loremaster milieu, much less Shadow World.

It's actually more about completing my collection of ICE books. I have all of the original RM/SW/MERP/SM books that I knew of back in the day, but there are a few I don't. I'm also looking to get mint or as near to mint copies off stuff that I used to run games back in the day and is no longer mint as a result. When you have 6 people thumbing through spell law every game night it takes it's toll on the books. The PDF's are great, because I can read them on tablet.
Now the hard copies all stay in protective covers, my precioussss! ;D
I always do the hard/soft copy + pdf through RPGNow for that reason, and that combo for these releases is really appreciated.

would it actually be possible to have timeline dates incorporated into the checklist? for the adventure modules if possible?
just to get a grip on the when and not just the where. :)
